🧵 Founding Fabric One - The World of Threadbare
Threadbare Plot - The first full plot for the main body of the game: the Eternal Loom and its three stolen elements, Null's three Denial Looms, and the StoryWeaver's journey.
"To care, to connect, to create - these are the tenets of rebellion." -- Frith FrayWalker, Elder of the Eternal Loom
Threadbare is set in a world unravelling at the seams. A creeping, invisible force known as The Void - born of forgetting, indifference, and the slow collapse of culture and community - is draining the fabric of reality itself. Memory fades. Stories vanish. People are unmade.
The StoryWeaver - that's you - must journey through this fraying world, recovering lost knowledge, weaving new stories, and rebuilding what has been lost. The weapons of this world are not swords and shields, but Memory, Imagination, and Spirit.
The Core Threads of Threadbare
The core threads that hold the world of Threadbare together - Memory, Imagination, and Spirit. These Core Threads are what all stories are made of. Both LoreQuests and StoryQuests consist of any one, two, or three of the Core Threads. Rediscovering these stories allow the threads to reweave the world of Threadbare.
➡️ Core Threads
The World of Threadbare
In the beginning, there was the Great Weave. A vast and luminous tapestry of life, story, and meaning, woven together across long-forgotten ages by those who remembered, those who imagined, and those who believed. Every landscape, every creature, every culture, every language had its own thread in the great fabric. Every story told added to its richness. Every voice that sang into the world made it more real. Then came the forgetting.
No one can say when it started for them. While scripture records the first frayed edge, no Elder recalls the first thread that simply... ceased to exist. What is known is this: when stories are no longer told, they fade away, and what remains is The Void - that vast, hungry silence of collective amnesia, working its way quietly across the Weave. Since the first unpicked stitch in the Lucent Lakes, it has not stopped.
What remains is the world of Threadbare.
A worn and tattered world of scattered settlements and frayed ruins, the last remnant of the once-glorious Weave. Its landscape is divided into regions, each shaped by the elemental fabric of its nature - some woven from dense, ancient fibres that hold memory like stone holds heat; others gossamer-thin, near-translucent places where imagination bleeds through the world like light through silk; still others rough and raw, bound together by sheer stubborn spirit. These regions do not end cleanly, neatly sewn to the next, and the next again. Their borders are frayed. Torn, shredded, shifting and drifting. No map has ever fully captured them. No cartographer ever will.
At the centre of what remains stands Frays End: the last bastion of hope against the ever-encroaching Void. Here, the Elders, ancient keepers of the worlds history and knowledge, keep watch over the Eternal Loom - the eternal engine at the heart of all creation, still turning, reweaving what has been lost. But the Elders grow few as the Void consumes ever more land. The Loom requires more than hands. It requires stories. And stories require StoryWeavers.
The Void does not rest. In the outer regions, whole settlements have gone quiet without warning - not destroyed, not abandoned, simply unremembered and disappeared, as though they never existed at all. The frayed ruins that dot the landscape are its monuments: the hollow settings of great stories that no one can now recall, standing like empty frames where paintings once hung.
The world came by its name in the long ages after Knot abandoned the Eternal Loom, when it grew, and was loved, and wore so thin that Threadlings began to call it Threadbare. But the Loom still turns, and somewhere in the unravelling, powerful threads remain - Memory, Imagination, and Spirit - waiting to be gathered and woven into something that can restore the Weave.
The FirstSpun
The FirstSpun are the three ultimate beings of Threadbare, the Creators of the Great Weave and the first of all things. From their work came Imagination, Memory, and Spirit, the Core Threads that everything in the world is made of. Scripture and song still argue about how it happened, and the KnitWitches say that is how it should be, since no single telling could hold them. The FirstSpun are not worshipped so much as just ever present and acknowledged - in a child's "what if?", in each "once upon a time", and in every "happy ever after". They left behind the Eternal Loom, and the Elders keep it turning, so that the Great Weaving remains an open invitation to anyone who wants to pick up a thread.

The Elders
The Elders of the Eternal Loom, the first of all Threadlings, woven on the Eternal Loom by the FirstSpun and its guardians, but not bound to it. There are nine Elders, three children of each FirstSpun, and before them all, Null. Each Elder is a child of one FirstSpun in particular, and is known by a single name. Only Frith FrayWalker carries a second, given by Threadlings for the Fraying she walked. See The Elders.
The LoomWardens, Keepers of the Eternal Loom: Whim (Imagination), Echo (Memory), and Vigil (Spirit).
Woven by all three FirstSpun
- Null - The Dark Elder, and the first of all the Elders, woven by all three FirstSpun as Knot, to hold the world together. Leader of the Obscurists, who uses the Void but does not command it. Based in the Observatory of the Obscure, above the Absurdity Abyss, high in the WeaveWatch Wale.
Children of If (Imagination)
- Whim - LoomWarden, Elder of the Eternal Loom, Guardian of If's Spindle.
- Muse - Keeper of the StoryQuests, Patron of Makers, Elder of the Ink Well
- Venture - Elder of the Imagine Isles, Overseer of the Dev Archipelago.
Children of Once (Memory)
- Echo - LoomWarden, Elder of the Eternal Loom, Guardian of Once's Warp Stones.
- Rune - Keeper of the LoreQuests, Carver of Memory, who cut the first marks in stone and wrote the first page in ink.
- Yearn - Keeper of What Is Missed, Elder of the Lucent Lakes, Mother of Wisps
Children of Ever (Spirit)
- Vigil - LoomWarden of Spirit, who has never once left the Loom untended. Keeper of the empty socket where Ever's Shuttle once sat.
- Frith FrayWalker - Elder of the Fraying, Lost to the Void.
- Kindle - Joiner of kin, who stitches strangers into communities.
Geography of Threadbare
Regions
- The Fraying - Cold, barren, and colourless, the Fraying is the ever encroaching borderlands of Threadbare. As the void creeps across the landscape this is all that remains. The frayed fabric and fibres of the world drifting into the nothing. Where Null sets loose the Fray, the creatures woven to hasten the Void's spread.
- The Ink Well - A damp, dark region of Threadbare. At the centre of this glistening, oily swampland is the Ink Well, a fabled sanctuary for the earliest writers. The place where it is said that written language was born.
- The Song Sanctuaries - Beautiful and fertile land where almost everything communicates in song. Plants, animals, and of course, people. Their earliest tribal stories told through rhyme and lyric.
- The Mythical Meadows - A never-ending sprawl of flowering meadows and soft rolling hills, far beyond the shores of Frays End. Some say this land itself is a myth, while others say they've seen it. Stories abound of creatures even the KnitWitches could not imagine. They say that every folktale from every culture becomes real here.
- The Drowsy Downs - A land of soft, rolling hills rumpled like a duvet, where dusk lingers longest and dreams go when they are dreamed. Home of the Noddlings and Reverie RestWell, Keeper of the Quiet Quilt, who stitches unfinished dreams into the great patchwork of the Quiet Quilt.
- The Imagine Isles - A remote and mysterious archipelago adrift in the Sea of Sagas, far to the West of Frays End, where they say you can will to life anything you can imagine. Home to the Dev Archipelago.
- The WeaveWatch Wale - A vast mountain range crowning the top of the Great Weave. Home to the Absurdity Abyss and the Observatory of the Obscure, home to Null.
- The Absurdity Abyss - An all-consuming, Void-filled chasm in the WeaveWatch Wale, torn open when Null took the Observatory of the Unseen. The Observatory of the Obscure stands on a floating peak above it - lair of Null and the Obscurists.
- The SunSpun Sands - A seemingly endless desert region of Threadbare, cast in eternal sunshine, within which can be found the fabled Performance Playa, the Diwan Dunes, the SunBleached Bookshop, and the Ballad Barrens. Bordered to the East by the Odyssey Ocean.
- The Forgotten Forests - Dark woodland regions on the fringes of Void influence.
- The Parable Pass - A crossing point referenced in accounts of Void events.
- The Lucent Lakes - Ancient home of the Wisps. Once a place of light, festivals, and community. Now wholly consumed by The Void, and beyond reach.
- The Remnant Realms A land of crumbling citadels, lost empires, and relics buried in dust. Ancient roads still lead through ruins, where odd remnants of old stories are scattered. Some say these are the stories that were never finished.
- The Allegory Abyss A deep gouge in the landscape, filled with poetry and prose. Once home of the great Bards of Threadbare, this land is said to be fading now, its poetry growing fainter every year.
- The Memoir Mines A vast system of forgotten tunnels, each the result of memory mining. Each tunnel now echoes with the lost fragments of a life story - personal histories and biographical tales. Haunted by MemoryMoths, Children of Null, floating on wings made of books, on drafts of whispering voices.
Towns and Cities
- Frays End - The starting point of the StoryWeaver's journey. A recurring hub area where time passes and weather changes.
- LoomLit - The lost island village of Lake Lucid, in the Lucent Lakes, and the origin of the Void itself. Consumed, and beyond reach.
- HemsHollow - A small and shabby border town on the Fraying, its East Wall held against the Void by the EverAfters, travelling storytellers who stayed and have told stories in the town square, day and night, ever since.
- LinenVille - A quiet, sun-bleached town of spinners and bleachers, where every history is folded neatly on the shelves of the Press, kept with great care and almost never told.
- WeaveWater - A small, thriving river town of weavers and dyers, a few days' walk from Frays End, whose looms weave cloth for all of Threadbare. Home of the Summoning Square and the Sacred Sewing Machine, where every StoryWeaver is made, under the watch of its KnitWitch, Wist WishWeaver.
Oceans, Seas, and Rivers
- The Odyssey Ocean - A vast ocean to the East, beyond and bordering the SunSpun Sands, stretching past the edge of every map. The Sea of Sagas will tell you a story. The Odyssey Ocean will make you one. It has never kept a traveller, only kept them waiting.
- The Sea of Sagas - A vast sea to the West of Frays End. A seemingly endless expanse of water on which every wave is a unique story, carrying boats, and the occasional swimmer. Home to the mysterious Imagine Isles, and the Dev Archipelago within them.
- The Sea of Stolen Dreams - A small, quiet sea within the Drowsy Downs, where every dream forgotten on waking rolls downhill to rest, glittering beneath the surface like stars.
Key Locations
- The Eternal Loom - The Eternal Loom is the beating heart of Threadbare. Considered its greatest structure and most ancient institution. The living mechanism through which the world's stories are woven into reality itself. It is at once a building, a philosophy, and a force. To stand inside it is to stand inside the world's will to continue existing. Charge of the Elders. Since Null stole its three elements, it can still mend, but can no longer create anything new.
- The EverLasting Library - Eternal repository of ancient knowledge and stories from all times and places.
- The University of the Unseen - The scientific and academic heart of Threadbare. Home of theorists, explorers, researchers, and philosophers.
- The Observatory of the Obscure - The dark heart of Threadbare. Set upon the floating peak of the highest of the WeaveWatch mountain range with a view of all of Threadbare. Once the primary campus of the University of the Unseen, now the ruined lair of Null and the Obscurists.
- Performance Playa - The stage of all worlds, and the beating heart of the SunSpun Sands. An opulent city of stages that reinvents itself every night, held together with string by Rook RagRavel and the Tattered Troupe, with the Canopy of Curiosity at its heart.
- The Canopy of Curiosity - The circus of the Performance Playa, and the one tent there that never changes shape. Behind each curtain around its ring waits a story from a different culture, and a home for StoryQuests alongside the EverLasting Library.
- The Diwan Dunes - A StoryQuest region dedicated to stories of Arabic culture from the world of Earth.
- The Interstice - The gaps in the fabric of the Weave, where Null hid in exile. Not the Void.
- The Denial Looms - Null's three looms, the Not Loom, the None Loom and the Never Loom, built from the elements stolen from the Eternal Loom and hidden in fortresses in the Ink Well, the Remnant Realms and the SunSpun Sands. The Fray are woven on them.
- The BlotWorks - Null's vast ink extraction rig, deep in the swamp of the Ink Well, built to drain the swamp and imprison its Inklings. Crowned by the Blotted Spire, and fortress of the Not Loom.
- The Keepsake - A ruined watchtower in the Forgotten Village, deep in the Memoir Mines beneath the Remnant Realms, whose lantern once guided the Delvers home and whose bell called every shift. Fortress of the None Loom.
- The Lost Library - A ruined library of unknown builders, half-buried in the deep desert of the SunSpun Sands. Not the EverLasting Library. Fortress of the Never Loom.
- The Dev Archipelago - A specific and separate group of islands within the Imagine Isles, dedicated to game development education, and Threadbare's learning and exploration zone for game development learners. Reached only aboard the Ferries of Fable across the Sea of Sagas, like the rest of the Isles, living through an entire story on the way. Each island holds practice quests and working templates that can be opened, studied, copied and changed.
- The Port of Possibility - The great harbour of the Imagine Isles, drifting with whichever islands need it most, where the Ferries of Fable dock and the barrels of ink from the Ink Well are unloaded.
