Barcid Dynasty

Culture: Carthaginian

The Carthaginians are an essentially mercantile people, relying on mercenaries to carry out the martial sector of the republic. The Barcids stand in contrast to this hands off management of military activity, their strategy for some time has been one of fast expansion with a tradition of fine generalship. Managing the frontier in Iberia, the Barcids are well accustomed to barbarian incursions and the ways of war of many cultures. While their history might be one obscured in insignificance, the Barcids are unconcerned for ancient custom. Their dynasty has produced no great mythical kings or statesmen, no philosophers nor merchant princes, but good honest warriors. As far as the Punics of Iberia are concerned, land and people are resources to conduct war and expansion. As such, the Barcids hardly find themselves represented in the capital city, nor are they well connected economically with power bases in North Africa. They have instead molded for themselves a self-sufficient Punic stronghold, mixed with elements of barbarian cultures and containing a general political ambition for conquest.

This great military ambition puts them at odds with the more soft and delicate culture of the majority of the republic, and an expansionist policy is unlikely to make friends in neighboring lands. As a result of their taciturn foreign policy, the Barcids have few friends and must move quickly to gain the respect of their kinsmen. The greatest prize for this family would be the conquest of Italy, a region quickly rising under the direction of a city state called Rome. An empire that stretches from Iberia to Italy would dominate the Western Mediterranean, and finally assert Barcid power over the rest of the republic.
