These Italic swordsmen are well-equipped light infantry. Armed with heavy javelins as well as swords, they fight by bombarding the enemy and then closing to fight hand to hand, in a similar way to Roman legionaries, which have their origin in these men.

Historically, the design of the later Roman maniple system was inspired in the Samnites, who used small groups of men to be able to quickly manoeuvre. The design was adopted after Roman armies had faced them in the Samnite wars, as this method was proven a lot more flexible in rough terrain.
