Plantings

Varietals:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon - Planted 1969-1972, dry farmed, own-rooted vines at peak altitude of 2,100 feet on extreme southeast slope of 30%
  • Cabernet Franc - Old-vine plantings from 1972, dry farmed in well-drained silt soils with decomposed, iron-rich volcanic magma
  • Grenache

The vineyard includes both original dry-farmed, own-rooted plantings from the early 1970s and some younger vines.

Climate

Warm days and cool nights create a preferred microclimate for Bordeaux varietals in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.

Wine Production

The Bates Family produces their own award-winning, limited-release Cabernet Sauvignon under the Janaca Vineyards label. The family also sells grapes to renowned winemakers throughout California.
