History

1976: Founded by Dexter and Valerie Ahlgren in Boulder Creek. The winery was located in the cellar of the Ahlgren's home.

Ahlgren used hands-on, traditional methods of winemaking to create wines from multiple sources:

  • Santa Cruz Mountains: Bordeaux varietals from Bates Ranch, small estate vineyard planted to Pinot Noir
  • Monterey County: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah from Ventana Vineyard (Arroyo Seco AVA)
  • Livermore Valley: Zinfandel and Semillon

2000: Dexter Ahlgren suffered a stroke. Daughter Beth Ahlgren took over as winemaker. Dexter recovered enough to continue participating in the winemaking process.

2005: The Ahlgrens (then aged 76 and 72) decided it was time to retire and put the winery up for sale.

2016: Winery closed after no suitable buyer was found.
