After 35 years, Marty Mathis continues working alongside Kathryn Kennedy, committed to growing and making world class sustainable wines from their Santa Cruz Mountains estate vineyard.
1973: Kathryn Kennedy planted seven acres of Cabernet Sauvignon in Saratoga using clone material from David Bruce. The vineyard sits at approximately 800 feet elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.
1975-1977: For the first two vintages, Kennedy sold her fruit to Mount Eden Vineyards.
1979: Kathryn Kennedy established her own winery brand and produced her first vintage, making her one of the pioneering women-led estate wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Present: The winery remains family-operated with son Marty Mathis serving as winemaker. The estate continues to focus on estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the original 1973 planting.
Kathryn Kennedy Winery is an important women-led Santa Cruz Mountains estate and a Cabernet Sauvignon benchmark for the region. The estate's focus on single-variety, estate-grown Cabernet from a specific mountain site exemplifies the terroir-driven approach that defines Santa Cruz Mountains winemaking.
