Syracuse, jewel of Sicily, has withstood Carthaginian sieges, Athenian ambition, and internal strife alike. Founded by Corinthian settlers, the city became a byword for wealth, power, and the brilliance of men like Archimedes. Its mighty walls and great harbor remain, but Syracuse’s golden age has faded under pressure from Rome and Carthage.
The Syracusans now face a choice that has confronted them for generations: whether to dominate Sicily alone, to lead a pan-Hellenic alliance against Phoenician and Roman encroachment, or to bend pragmatically before stronger neighbors. A wise tyrant — or a cunning council — might restore Syracuse’s former glory and prove that the city’s destiny is not yet spent.
