Description
Woodworking represents shaping wood material using various tools to produce desired result.
Activation
Right click when holding a Woodworking material to open the woodworking GUI, then place the material into the input slot. The following material is available:
- Log
- Board
- Bone
The outline of the material placed in the input slot is displayed in the crafting area. Material is always placed with vertical grain orientation.
Actions
Depending on the tools available to the player, different actions are available.
- Knife - cut out a triangle of material from an edge
- Drill - cut out a hole in the material
- Axe - cut (wide) material all the way through along the grain (vertically) or cut out a rhombus from an edge against the grain (horizontally)
- Saw - partially cut (narrow) material along or across the grain from an edge
- Chisel - cut out a short line from an edge or where the material has been cut or drilled.
Knife, chisel and drill can only work flat material such as a board. Axes cannot be used to work delicate material.
Some tools offer more than one action, different orientations and shapes. Right click to select the next available action. When possible, such action is chosen that is most fitting given the location of the cursor and other context.
Left click to perform the current action. Some actions, such as saw cutting, allow repeating by holding down the left mouse button. Repeated action continues in the original direction as long as there is material to remove, or until the left mouse button is released.
When an action is performed, the corresponding tool is damaged. Actions covering a larger area usually damage tools more.
Different tools require different clearance area, which refers to the area that needs to be open for the action to be possible. For example axes require a big clearance area, since a swing is needed while chisels and drills require a minimal clearance area.
Axes and saws both can make long cuts in the material, although axes can only do that along the grain. Axes also make a wider cut than saws, consuming more material.
Patterns
A single material can be shaped into a multitude of results, depending on the pattern that matches shape created by the player's actions.
Depending on the material that is being worked on and available recipes, a list of possible patterns becomes available. Player can choose a pattern to be displayed over the material for aid, but it is not needed and only the shape decides on the result.
Often multiple patterns can produce the same result. This allows some room for errors and for using less ideal tools. There is often many ways to achieve the same pattern, more advanced tools can make achieving certain patters faster and easier.
Work area is typically a grid of 17 width by 33 height.
Patterns are defined as one or more polygons, where lines can either go along the grid, or diagonally at 45 degree angle. Some patterns may also be defined as having one or more holes. A pattern is complete when all the lines of any polygon and holes match, and there are no extra cuts inside the polygons. Cuts made in material that is outside the polygons are ignored.
Input material is consumed when a recipe is completed and the result is picked up from the output slot. If more input material is available, the player can keep carving the same or a different pattern without closing the GUI.
Unfinished carving can be cancelled without consuming input material by closing the GUI any time.
Recipes
Following items can be produced by Woodworking:
- Board
- Shaft
- Lumber
- Support Beam
- Paddle
- Wooden Mallet
- Scutching Knife
- Wooden Comb Paddle
Board
Carved from a log, a Board is a wider and thicker lumber, mainly used as an intermediate Woodworking material. Dual output recipe requires a saw.
Shaft
Carved from a Board, a Shaft is a thicker pole, a save, mainly used as an intermediate Woodworking material. Dual output recipe requires a saw.
Lumber
Carved from a log, the recipe requires a saw and creates 4 lumber per log. It is intended to replace the more generous crafting grid recipe for getting 8 lumber per log.
Support Beam
Carved from a log, the recipe requires a saw, and the output is equivalent to crafting grid recipe.
Paddle
Carved from a Board, the output is equivalent to crafting grid recipe.
Sawdust
Some measure of sawdust is produced by sawing and drilling material. Sawdust has currently no application.
Bone Carving
Bone carving works in a similar way to woodcarving, but there are key differences. Only saw and knife can be used as tools.
- Knife - file sides and small holes in the middle of the material
- Saw - more efficiently make straight cut in the material
The following items can be carved from a bone:
- Bone needle
- Bone Knife Blade
Bone Needle
Notes
- Sawmill will produce 8 lumber per log.
