This subtle corruption was noticed by ancient grammarians and may have even been the namegiver of a later misinterpreted 'Γ―' iota ΞΉΟŽΟ„Ξ± β‰ˆ β²“β²ŸΟ― eiōt.
While today iota often refers to the tiny yodh Χ™ dot on top of the ΞΉ, turning 'ΞΉ' into 'i', originally it may have
distinguished aita from VΓ€ter.
