Inpatient — Nursing Workbench

The Nursing Workbench is a dedicated interface for nursing staff. It provides a ward-centric view — showing all rooms and BHTs assigned to the current department — and quick access to the most common nursing tasks without navigating the full inpatient menu.

Page: Inpatient → Nursing WorkBench (also accessible from the Admission Profile Dashboard header button)

Template: Uses template_without_menu.xhtml — the full application menu is hidden, keeping the interface clean for ward terminals.

Layout

The workbench is divided by a PrimeFaces Splitter:

Left Panel — Patient List (15% width)

A compact patient browser for the current department, with two tabs:

  • Rooms tab — lists all occupied rooms by room number (amber buttons). Click a room to load that patient in the right panel.
  • BHT tab — lists all active BHTs by BHT number (blue buttons). Click a BHT to load that patient.

The department name is shown at the top. If no department is set in the session, a red "No Department" warning is shown.

Right Panel — Patient Actions (85% width)

When a patient is selected, the panel shows two rows of command panels:

Row 1:

  • Edit — Edit Admission, Room Change, Guardian Room Change
  • Clinical Data — Patient History, Clinical Notes, Ward Medications, Medicine Timeline, Discharge Medications, Investigations, Images, Diagnosis Card, Clinical Discharge, Nursing Discharge, Physical Discharge
  • Room Management — Room Details, Add New Room, Add Guardian Room, Initiate Transfer, Accept Patients
  • Service — Add Services & Investigations, Add Outside Charges, Add Professional Fees, Add Estimated Professional Fee, Add Timed Services
  • Surgeries — Add Surgeries, Manage Surgeries

Row 2:

  • Pharmaceuticals & Consumables — Pharmacy BHT Request, Receive Medicines from Pharmacy, Return Medicines to Pharmacy, Issue Discharge Medicines, Direct Issue to BHTs, Direct Issue to Theatre Cases, BHT Issue Requests, View Pharmacy Requests, Search IP Direct Issues by Bill, Search IP Direct Issues by Item, Search IP Direct Issue Returns by Bill, Search IP Direct Issue Returns by Item
  • Reports — Pharmacy Issue Summary (Entity), Pharmacy Issue Summary (DTO - Fast), Lab Bill Summary

Selecting a Patient

Click any room or BHT button in the left panel. The controller calls NursingWorkBenchController.selectAdmission(admissionId), which loads the selected admission into admissionController.current. The right panel updates via AJAX — no full page reload.

Navigation

  • Inpatient Dashboard — navigate to the full Admission Profile for the currently selected patient
  • Back to Home — return to the main application home screen

Several buttons are visible only when the logged-in user holds the corresponding privilege:

Open Issues

The Nursing Workbench functionality is under active development. Issue #19301 tracks the workbench roadmap. Issue #21528 added the missing command buttons from the Inpatient Dashboard in June 2026.
