The Observatory of the Unseen was the scientific heart of the University of the Unseen, and its crowning campus: a tall, leaning tower of brass instruments, mismatched lenses, and dog-eared notebooks, built at the very top of the Great Weave, high in the WeaveWatch Wale, so that it had a full view of the whole of Threadbare. The University filled it with lenses of every kind, a complex observatory of many eyes, to watch and study the world. Here, the revered Threadbare Theorists charted what could not quite be seen. They measured the tension of memory, calibrated the half-lives of forgotten names, and aimed their telescopes not at stars but at the soft blank places where stories used to be. Professor Alfeus AllPatch presided over many a feverish blackboard. The Observatory never promised answers, but it insisted, stubbornly, that the questions were worth asking.
It was that view of the whole world that made Null want it. Null marched the Obscurists North and took the Observatory from the University, and the taking tore the mountains open around it, forming the Absurdity Abyss. Null renamed it the Observatory of the Obscure. The day is remembered as the Fall of the Observatory of the Unseen.
