Bug box

The bug box is an item used to breed insects as animal feed. They appear as several stacked trays of substrate, with veggie scraps inside.

Bug boxes can be stacked and placed next to each other while functioning as normal. They are one of the first steps of a sustainable zoo food chain.

Bug boxes are almost entirely necessary to feed insectivore animals, as feeder insects are otherwise rare items obtained by breaking rare blocks. Many ambient animals also use feeder insects to breed.

The bug box has a shellfish-farming counterpart called the mussel box.

Bug boxes can be crafted with 6x Spruce Planks, 1x Carrot, 1x Iron Nugget and 1x Mulch. Any type of mulch can be used, but the planks have to be spruce.

Insects

Zookeepers will need to find a starting stock of insects to start a bug box farm. There are three options, which are all found in different locations and fed different items.

  • Earthworms can be found by breaking birch, spruce, and dark oak rotting logs. They can be fed most organic items, such as apples, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, wheat, and wheat seeds.
  • Mealworms can be found by breaking oak and dark oak rotting logs. They need to be fed carrots or potatoes.
  • Termites can be found by breaking acacia and jungle rotting logs. They need to be fed sticks.
  • Leafcutter ants can be found by breaking birch rotting logs. They need to be fed leaves of any kind.

Farming

Once a starting insect is found, the player can place insects in the first slot and their appropriate feed items in the second slot of the bug box. One insect item is enough for up to eight "breeding attempts," as long as eight feed items are provided.

The first insect item will be consumed immediately, and you'll know the process has begun. This is a slow process; while feed items exist, one attempt to create a new insect happens every 1000 ticks. There is a 50% chance of generating a new insect for each attempt.

Removing feed items during this process will immediately halt any breeding and waste precious time! However, the bug box does remember if an insect item has been consumed and will only stay "active" for its total of 8000 ticks.

The bug box has 5 slots to "breed" insects into. Every slot in the bug box can store a whole stack (64) of corresponding items.
