The Sapphorian Naval Ship Boudicca is the flagship of the Sapphorian Navy and the most powerful warship in the world. She is currently berthed at Fivaviana.

Measuring just under 800ft from prow to stern, the ship is of a comparable size to the warships of the ancient world, and although far less advanced, she is still more than a match for anything the outside world has to offer. Her guns have an effective range of almost a mile and she is surprisingly fast. Her battle group maintains a constant vigil around the island.

Specifications

The Boudicca is a Dominatrix-Class Capital ship, one of several in service to the Sapphorian Navy. She is by some measure the most powerful, possessing several upgrades that elevate her above her peers. Instead of the 24 main guns equipped to the other ships of her class, the Boudicca boasts 32, and they are also of a higher calibre with a longer effective range and greater stopping power. She has a top speed of 35 knots, meaning she is also significantly faster than the tall ships used by most others.

The ship has a crew of 1200 and can remain at sea for several months without resupply, though in practice, remains close to the mainland and never needs to stay away for this long. She has a 45,000 ton displacement and is powered by twin biofuel engines, as these remain the only large-scale viable power source available to the Sapphorians.

Her armaments include long-range cannons for ship-to-ship exchanges with minigun turrets to defend her from closer enemies and boarding actions. She is also equipped with combat drones and long-range missiles, though the outside world does not have anything close to the sort of threat that would justify their use. Her armour is thick enough to withstand multiple direct hits from the most powerful cannonades outsider and Sapphorian illegal slaver ships possess, making her, for all intents and purposes, invincible. In addition, she leads the Sapphorian First Fleet, a battlegroup of 8 other small and mid-sized support ships.

History

The Boudicca is actually the twelfth ship to carry the name, though elements of the first ship remain to this day. As each new build nears completion, the previous one is decommissioned and dismantled at the Fivaviana Shipbreaking Yard. Large parts of the hull, fittings and any weapons that have not been superseded by newer versions are then transferred across. During this time, the flag is temporarily transferred to one of the fleet's other Dominatrix-Class ships, then with great pomp and ceremony, the new Boudicca is commissioned, christened and launched. This last happened 17 years ago, with the launch being overseen by Crown Princess Selina, as though her mother was still Monarch at the time, her health was already frail.

Etymology

In British history, Queen Boudicca of the Iceni was a warrior woman who led an uprising against the conquering Roman forces in AD60-61. She is considered a heroine and a symbol of liberty, making her the perfect namesake for the Sapphorian's flagship, as she too is a symbol of their independence and strength.
