Ancient World - TrinianGames/Sapphory GitHub Wiki

The Ancient World refers to planet Earth as it existed in the time before World War Three. It is poorly understood and often misinterpreted in modern-day Sapphory. The history of the ancient world ends in the mid twenty-first century, shortly after the discovery and colonisation of Sapphory.

Geo-Political Situation

The Third World War was caused by a misunderstanding between the rival empires of The United States of America (incorrectly referred to in Sapphorian history as the American Empire) and the People's Republic of China (Incorrectly called the Chinese Empire.) Before its outbreak, America and China were rival superpowers engaged in the Second Cold War. This was fought across multiple fronts, including trade embargoes, proxy-wars and cyber-warfare.

Early Sapphory found itself caught in the middle of the escalating situation, but came through the war unscathed by observing a policy of strict neutrality and cultivating good relations with all sides. It is also possible that the male leaders of the ancient nations balked at the prospect of using nuclear weapons against a non-hostile island of entirely women and girls.

Battle of the Sexes

By the time of the war, relations between men and women were very poor. Women in developing countries and highly conservative nations were beginning to achieve freedoms that had previously only been enjoyed by those in rich countries, much to the chagrin of many of their more traditionally-minded men. Meanwhile in the West, women had felt for some time that the rights they had won in the twentieth century were under sustained attack, and that those chosen to speak for them did not fight the right battles, preferring to focus on minutia and petty grievances over genuine problems.

Most Western nations suffered terminally declining birth rates. The reasons for this should have been obvious: the erosion of the traditional family, the escalating cost of living causing people to put off having families indefinitely and the simple fact that having children was expensive. Policies aimed at diffusing this timebomb came far too late and long after societal collapse had become an inevitability. All of these lessons are closely observed by the Sapphorian Government today, as it is intent on avoiding repeating the ancient world's mistakes.

Misunderstanding by Sapphorian history

There are multiple examples, used in the game for comedic effect, of misinterpretations of history by scholars in Sapphory.
