Beliefs

← all cultures · regions and settlements · wiki index

RIS replaces the base game's handful of religions with 51 local beliefs, one per people, near enough. In each region a belief is either the majority or a minority held alongside a larger one.

51 of the 51 are on the map at the campaign start, across 1,305 regions.

What a belief does, and what it does not

  • Beliefs do not unlock buildings or units.
  • No belief creates unrest against another. The base game's religious friction is switched off across the board.
  • What a belief's strength does decide is how much a settlement's own buildings add to it: the same building adds a different amount where the belief is weak than where it is the majority, and each page shows that for its own belief.
  • Culture and belief are separate axes. 10 of the 22 cultures have factions on more than one belief. The cultures are on their own pages.

The 51 beliefs, by group

Majority and Minority are provinces: the ones where this is the largest belief, and the ones where it is held alongside a larger one. Together they are every province that holds it. Factions is not a count of provinces: it is how many factions have this as their state belief, so a faction with forty provinces counts once.

Beliefs no faction defaults to

11 of the 51 are the state belief of no faction: Baltic, Mysian, Lydian, Pamphylian, Phrygian, Lycaonian, Isaurian, Cappadocian, Indo-Greek, Cypriot Greek, Pamphylian Greek. 11 of those are still on the map, held by provinces rather than by a state.
