The Italic Revolt

Breaks away: Italics from Whoever holds the eight towns at the time; at the campaign start these are Rome, the Picentes, the Samnites and the Lucanians

Eight towns of central and southern Italy rise up and form a new faction, the Italics. It can only happen from turn 120 (241 BC), once the Gracchan reform has taken place and the Roman factions have built enough colonies. The Italics are at war with Rome and the other Roman factions from the moment they appear.

It can happen in any campaign, whoever the player is, once the Gracchan reform has taken place for Rome or one of the Roman factions that split from it.

What sets it off

  • From turn 120 (241 BC) onwards, once the Gracchan reform has taken place for Rome, either of the two Roman rebel factions or the Roman Senate, the game counts the colony buildings (of either level) in every settlement held by these four factions anywhere on the map; if there are at least 20, there is a 35% chance of the revolt, rolled at the end of every faction's turn.

What happens

  • Corfinium, Teate, Asculum, Bovianum, Venusia, Canusium, Grumentum and Larinum all rebel, whoever owns them.
  • All eight pass to the Italics, a faction that did not exist until now.
  • Each town gets a garrison of Italic Skirmishers, Italic Cohort and Italic Equites at 0.01 times normal strength.
  • When Corfinium goes over, the Italics receive 10,000 denarii.
  • At the start of the first turn on which the Italics exist, they declare war on Rome, the two Roman rebel factions and the Roman Senate.
  • The Italics stay at war with all four: if they are not at war with one of them at the start of their turn, they declare war on it again.
  • The revolt happens only once per campaign.
