Prerequisites within this focus. Box colour is the tier (blue CORE, grey STANDARD, green UNCOMMON, amber RARE, purple UNIQUE); dotted arrows are alternatives (“or”); a line can pass behind another box, so follow it from its start. 9 of these 12 breakthroughs also need breakthroughs from other foci, which the overview above lists.
- Tier: CORE · Era: Primitive
- Prerequisites: G02 + River or Water source
- Unlocks: Unlocks Water Management focus. ⟨[+1 Food] from [{Farm} {Fresh Water}] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — the canonical Civil-Service farm bonus, arriving with the first irrigation ditch. (Farms already build on Hills in Civ V.)
- Leads to: FA03 Selective Breeding, FA07 Chinampa (Floating Gardens), FA10 Hydroponics, FA13 Flood Harvest Tradition, FA15 Mountain Terrace Farming, WM01 Canal Building, WM03 Qanat System, WM09 Rice Paddy Mastery
- Tier: STANDARD · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: G02
- Unlocks: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Wheat] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — the soil no longer tires.
- Leads to: FA03 Selective Breeding, FA06 Nitrogen Fixation Awareness, FA16 Nitrate Fertiliser
- Tier: STANDARD · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: G02 + AH02 + (G07 or (FA01 + FA02)) — Seed Saving and Herd Animal Domestication; then Botanical Classification, or Irrigation with Crop Rotation
- Unlocks: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Plantation] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — improved varieties of every cultivated crop. ⟨[+1 Production] from [Pasture] tiles [in all cities]⟩ (wool, hide, horn); War Dogⁿ [unit, Melee; cost 35; mv 3; str 7; ⟨Can move after attacking⟩] — the same idea applied to herds (Selective Breeding (Animals), merged here in v3.102). Also discoverable through Animal Husbandry.
- Leads to: FA09 Greenhouse Cultivation, AH08 Carrier Pigeon Networks, AH11 Veterinary Medicine, CH09-W Bio-Organic Synthesis, GN02 DNA Structure, GN03 Genetic Engineering, ES03-W Biomass Power Plant
- Tier: UNCOMMON · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: FA02 (Crop Rotation)
- Unlocks: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Farm] tiles without [Fresh Water] [in all cities]⟩ — legumes rescue the dry farms that irrigation could not reach.
- Tier: UNIQUE · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: FA01 + Lake/wetland terrain
- Unlocks: Chinampa Gardenⁿ [replaces Water Mill; 75/2; +2 Food, +1 Production; ⟨[+1 Food] from [Lakes] tiles [in this city]⟩]. Civ unique: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Lakes] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — every lake is a field. (The Aztec Floating Gardens remain Aztec.)
- Notes: Aztec-inspired.
- Tier: UNCOMMON · Era: Early Modern
- Prerequisites: FA03 + OP01 (Glassmaking)
- Unlocks: Greenhouseⁿ [70/1; ⟨[+1 Food] from [Tundra] tiles [in this city]⟩; ⟨[+1 Food] from [Snow] tiles [in this city]⟩; ⟨[+1 Food] from [Desert] tiles [in this city]⟩]. Any crop in any climate — under glass.
- Tier: UNCOMMON · Era: Modern
- Prerequisites: FA01 + CH06 (Periodic Table)
- Unlocks: Hydroponics Labⁿ [375/2; +2 Food; ⟨[-10]% Food consumption by [Population] [in this city]⟩]. Food without soil.
- Leads to: FA11 Vertical Farming
- Tier: UNCOMMON · Era: Space
- Prerequisites: FA10 + CO11 (Reinforced Concrete) + EN06 (Semiconductor Mastery — LED grow lights)
- Unlocks: ⟨[+1 Gold] from all [Hydroponics Lab] buildings⟩ — produce grown and sold inside the city.
- Tier: UNIQUE · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: FA01 + Flood-prone river biome
- Unlocks: Nilometerⁿ [65/1; +2 Food, +1 Culture; ⟨[+1 Food] from [Flood plains] tiles [in this city]⟩; ⟨Must be on [River]⟩]. Civ unique: ⟨[+1 Food, +1 Production] from [Flood plains] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — the inundation is a gift, and you have learned to read it.
- Notes: Egyptian/Mesopotamian hydraulic civilisation.
- Tier: UNIQUE · Era: Primitive
- Prerequisites: G02 + AH02 + Grassland/steppe biome + low city count (≤2)
- Unlocks: Yurt Campⁿ [40/1; +1 Food, +1 Production, +1 Culture]. Civ uniques: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Grassland] tiles without [Improvement] [in all cities]⟩ (the herds feed on open range — improving the grass ends it) and ⟨[+1] Movement <for [Settler] units>⟩. Few cities, wide range.
- Notes: Mongolian/Kazakh/Maasai pastoral traditions.
- Tier: UNIQUE · Era: Ancient
- Prerequisites: FA01 + CO01 + Mountain/highland biome
- Unlocks: Terrace Granaryⁿ [replaces Granary; 60/1; +2 Food; ⟨[+1 Production] from [Hill] tiles [in this city]⟩]. Civ unique: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Hill] tiles [in all cities]⟩ — the slopes are carved into fields. (The Inca Terrace farm remains Inca.)
- Notes: Incan andenes, Philippine Banaue, Balinese subak.
- Tier: STANDARD · Era: Early Modern
- Prerequisites: MI08 (Saltpeter Mining) + FA02 (Crop Rotation)
- Unlocks: ⟨[+1 Food] from [Farm] tiles [in all cities] <when number of [Saltpeter] is more than [0]> <before discovering [Catalysis]>⟩ — mined nitrates and guano on every field, for as long as you hold Saltpeter: the Haber process's bonus, bought with a resource the musket also wants. Competing Solution (§1.2): the alternative to Catalysis (CH12), detour margin ×1.5 while Catalysis exists in this world; if Catalysis is discovered first this is never developed, and if it arrives later this is superseded. The bonus simply passes to the Haber process, which needs no Saltpeter.
- Notes: Before 1913 the world's fields were fed from Chilean nitrate and Peruvian guano.
