Known Limitations
This page openly lists what is not yet finished in JourneyPulse or not yet checked in the car. Status: version 4.961 (build 6).
⚠️ Beta: The following features are new and not yet tested extensively in the car. They may change or occasionally be wrong.
Not yet tested in the car
New in 4.91 (build 7) and 4.92 (build 1), not yet fully tested in the car:
- Limit announcements to the essentials: The switch is new. On the motorway the exit is then only announced once shortly before; whether that's enough for changing lanes hasn't been tested.
- Tunnels: The estimate no longer kicks in when stationary and waits longer at low speed. On a trip with build 7 it briefly kicked in once more when braking in an industrial area, because the OBD speed lags behind GPS; since 4.92 (build 1) the slower of the two decides. Whether that's enough has to be shown on a trip.
- Turning right-of-way: The notice flickered in CarPlay every second. It now stays put during short detection dropouts; this hasn't been checked in the car yet.
- Tab bar, status card and Live Activity: The tab bar stays visible outside the Live tab, the status card no longer truncates the distance, and the Live Activity shows the trip duration again. After a night at one place it still showed the time since midnight when setting off; this is fixed in 4.92 (build 1) but not yet confirmed on the device.
New in 4.94 (build 3), not yet tested in the car:
- Parking mode: After five minutes stationary during a recording the app switches off GPS and wakes it again via motion detection. How quickly that kicks in when driving off and whether a piece of route is missing at the start has to be shown on a trip.
- Location for Siri and vehicle beacon: "Report hazard" and remembering the parking spot get a fresh location again; not yet confirmed on the device.
New in 4.94 (builds 4 to 7), not yet tested in the car:
- CarPlay power saving mode: Since 4.95 (build 9) it only switches to the flat map; in both modes overlays are redrawn only when something changes. Whether speedometer, speed limit and instructions appear instantly in the car is still open.
- CarPlay map bar: "Save place" and the combined start/stop button have only been checked in the simulator.
- Fetching a location after gaps: The app requests a new location after 60 or 90 seconds without one; not yet observed on a real trip.
- Auto-POI in parking mode: Covered by automated tests; whether the place is created during a real stop with recording running has to be shown on a trip.
New in 4.95 (builds 1 to 3), not yet tested in the car:
- Offline maps DACH and Tunisia: Downloading, updating and automatic choice of the set have not yet been fully tested on the device; the Tunisia set has not yet been driven on site.
- Overpass outages and damaged tile archives: covered by automated tests, not yet observed in everyday use.
New in 4.95 (build 4), not yet tested on the device:
- iCloud backup and restore: covered by automated tests, not yet checked with a real iCloud Drive and a reinstall. After restoring, the app must be restarted once.
New in 4.95 (build 5), not yet tested on the device:
- Recording without gaps at home: Leaving the home area only counts once an accurate position is clearly outside the radius. A real trip therefore starts slightly later, usually a few seconds after leaving. Tiny trips already saved remain and can be deleted by swiping.
New in 4.95 (build 6), not yet tested in the car:
- CarPlay reconnect: The fix for playback stopping after the first announcement can't be reproduced by automated tests and has to prove itself on a drive with a dropped connection.
- Audio output profiles: How well "iPhone speaker" takes effect with CarPlay connected, and how long a pause your hands-free system needs, depends on the vehicle. If the beginning of an announcement is cut off, increase the pause.
New in 4.95 (builds 7 and 8), not yet tested in the car:
- Your own reports: Storing, managing and including them in warnings are covered by automated tests. Whether the warning for your own report arrives in time on the next drive still has to prove itself in the car.
- Silence during the hands-free pause: Whether your hands-free system keeps the connection open while silence is playing depends on the vehicle and has to prove itself on a drive.
- Waypoints (build 8): "Optimal route" sorts by straight-line distance, not real travel time; with detours around rivers or mountains another order may be faster. Waypoints exist on the iPhone only, not in CarPlay, and show only in the list, not on the map. While waypoints are active the app makes no fuel stop suggestion. Not tested on the device.
New in 4.95 (build 9), not yet tested in the car:
- Battery drain while navigating: Whether the throttled queries (hazard reports by distance, speed limit per road segment, display off with CarPlay) noticeably ease the battery while charging has to show on a longer drive. A hazard report that appears only after the last reload now shows up to about 1.25 km or one minute later.
- Announcement sound: Registering as a navigation prompt depends on the car. Whether announcements sound clearer in CarPlay and over Bluetooth audio has to show in the car.
New in 4.96 (build 1), not yet tested in the car:
ℹ️ Developed without an EV: I do not own an electric car myself and therefore cannot test the EV features live. I rely on your feedback: please report anything unusual and send the debug logs (Settings → Maintenance & Debug, enable "Verbose debug logs", take a drive, send the log by mail).
- Electric vehicle and charge planning: Planner, charging time and search are covered by automated tests but have not yet been driven with a real EV. Consumption and charging curves in the model list are guide values. Charger availability (free/occupied) is still missing. While you charge at a station, the remaining charging time no longer counts towards the arrival time. Only a few vehicles report the battery level via OBD (PID 5B).
From earlier builds, covered by automated tests but not yet driven in the car:
- Destination prediction with silent route: not tested on the device.
- Departure time advisor and notifications for regular trips: not tested on the device. The notification is based on your previous trips, not on current traffic.
- Appointment reminders from the calendar: not tested on the device. The travel time applies to the location at the last planning; how often iOS allows background refresh is up to the system. If you're somewhere else only shortly before departure, you may get the reminder too early or too late. Location texts that Apple Maps can't find get no reminder.
- Siri and Control Center: Shortcuts in German and English; the test on the device is pending. The Control Center toggle replaces the two previous switches and has to be added again.
- Location when stationary and after the trip ends: The app lowers accuracy when stationary and ends location after a trip ends in the background. Whether the track stays gap-free has not yet been checked in the car.
- Trip and stay on the road without a beacon (since 4.961 build 3): The thresholds (15 km/h, five minutes without driving speed) are derived from a debug log and not yet tested in the car. Cycling briskly may produce a "trip"; a long standstill in a jam with the engine off can split the trip.
CarPlay
- A motorway on-ramp is sometimes announced as "turn left/right/left" instead of "follow the on-ramp".
- iOS determines the width of the turn display. The app can't change it.
See CarPlay.
OBD
- The profile for vLinker FS/MS has not yet been checked with real hardware.
- Access to further control units of older vehicles (K-Line) is in progress and not yet usable.
- Plain-text fault code descriptions: the database of descriptions is still being extended.
See OBD.
Offline maps
- The tile set for Germany is around 5 GB. It must be downloaded in the foreground; if you switch apps, the download stops.
- Without tiles there is no offline routing, no speed limit, no lane guidance and no personal routing.
- There is only Germany; further countries are not planned for now.
See Offline Maps.
General
- Background recording needs "Always" location. Closing the app in the app switcher can restrict it. In iOS Low Power Mode the app records with slightly lower accuracy and queries warnings and OBD values less often.
- The MCP interface is beta. It is reachable on the local network but only answers requests with the access token. Don't share the token.
- Fuel prices require your own Tankerkönig key; the radius search is limited to 25 km on the server side.
