CarPlay

🇩🇪 Deutsche Version

JourneyPulse runs on your vehicle's display: with map, route guidance, warnings and a consumption/speed limit overlay. The app only needs a normal CarPlay connection (cable or wireless), no additional setup in the car.

Setup

The settings are in the app under Settings › CarPlay:

Setting Meaning
Enable CarPlay Off: CarPlay stays connected but only shows a notice screen.
Trip start/stop Buttons to start and end a recording in CarPlay.
Save POI Allows saving a place from CarPlay.
Report hazard Allows reporting a hazard from CarPlay.
Maneuver preview Shows the maneuvers after next in addition to the current turn instruction.
Consumption display Shows the average consumption of the current trip (only with a connected OBD adapter).

Map

  • The map zooms smoothly with your speed and follows with an animated camera.
  • The position arrow snaps to the route instead of jumping beside it with inaccurate GPS. Only on a real deviation does the map show the raw position again.
  • During route guidance the camera shifts so that the maneuver panel doesn't cover anything.
  • If GPS fails in a tunnel, navigation continues with the OBD speed; an orange arrow shows the estimated position.

Overlays and banners

  • Status bar with distance to the next hazard and — with OBD connected — the average consumption.
  • Speed limit as a traffic sign, also without navigation. When exceeded (limit plus adjustable tolerance, default +5 km/h) the sign turns red. It needs the installed Offline Maps.
  • Turn banner with the maneuver icons of the iPhone banner; junctions and turning right-of-way roads are treated like real turns.
  • Lane guidance before junctions and exits (motorway from 1.5 km, otherwise from 500 m). It appears as a lane bar at the bottom of the map; the display in the instrument cluster is only available where the vehicle supports it. Offline map data is needed here too.
  • Warning banners for hazards on the route, see Warnings.

Reporting a hazard

Tap the warning triangle in the map view. It opens a list with these types: speed camera, traffic jam, traffic calming, roadworks, closure, accident hotspot, other. The type reported last is at the top, because the same thing is often reported several times. If the car cannot display the map, a compact control panel appears instead (tracking start/stop, report hazard, open app); there the button is called Report hazard.

Other map buttons: start tracking, stop tracking, open app (only if enabled in the settings).

Navigation in CarPlay

Route guidance uses the native CarPlay maneuver display and the app's voice announcements (details under Navigation). CarPlay itself determines the position and width of the native display; the app can't influence it, so very long street names may be shortened.

⚠️ Beta: The CarPlay optimisation has not yet been fully tested in the car. In particular:

  • At motorway on-ramps there is sometimes a turn announcement instead of "follow the on-ramp".

Notes

  • Only operate the app in the vehicle when stationary.
  • Automatic connection to the OBD adapter is attempted when navigation starts or CarPlay connects, provided the iPhone is charging.
