Offline Maps
JourneyPulse can calculate routes without mobile data. To do so, you download a map data set (a so-called tile set) to your iPhone once. The same offline data is also used by the speed limit sign, lane guidance and route matching.
What you need
- Free storage: DACH takes up around 6.6 GB, Tunisia around 170 MB. The app shows the free storage.
- A stable Wi-Fi connection for the download.
- Space in device storage, not in iCloud: tile sets are not included in the backup.
Regions
From 4.95 (build 1) there is one tile set per region:
| Region | Coverage | Size |
|---|---|---|
| DACH | Germany, Austria, Switzerland as one set, so cross-border routes work | approx. 6.6 GB |
| Tunisia | whole country | approx. 170 MB |
| USA | not yet published | – |
The app picks the right set automatically based on location and destination. If start and destination are not in an installed area, or in two different ones, the route is calculated with Apple Maps.
Downloading map data
Everything is under Settings → Navigation & Announcements → Routing & Offline Maps.
- Each region has its own Load button. The download address is built in; you don't have to enter anything.
- A bar shows progress, percentage and amount of data. You can Cancel at any time; cancelled downloads free up their space again.
- The set is then installed. With several gigabytes this takes a moment.
Only one download runs at a time; load the second region afterwards.
Important: The download runs only in the foreground. If you switch apps, it stops. Keep the app open and the screen on.
Moving on from the Germany set
If you downloaded the Germany set before 4.95, you keep it: it appears under DACH named "Deutschland". Update replaces it with the full DACH set.
Status and management
Each region shows size, data date and installation time. Update downloads the set again, Delete removes it after confirmation.
Own archive
Under Own archive you first choose the target region. Then you can import a tar archive from Files (created with valhalla_build_extract) or load it from a URL. When importing, the file is moved into the app's storage and is no longer at its original location afterwards.
The map data comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL licence) and routes are calculated with the Valhalla routing system. It has a data date that is not updated automatically.
Choosing the routing engine
In the same place you choose what JourneyPulse uses to calculate routes:
| Option | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Apple Maps | With traffic, needs mobile data. Bike routes use the pedestrian profile. |
| Offline | Routes without a network against the installed tiles, with its own bike profile. No traffic. |
| Hybrid | Plans with Apple Maps traffic and recalculates offline on the way. Needs tiles but doesn't get stuck in dead zones. |
Without an installed tile set, navigation always continues via Apple Maps, even if you've chosen "Offline" or "Hybrid". The app points this out here.
What else depends on the offline data
- Speed limit: While driving, shows the limit of the current road as a sign, also in CarPlay. Above limit plus tolerance (default +5 km/h) the sign turns red.
- Lane guidance: Lanes are shown before junctions and exits.
- Personal routing: The arrival time learns from your own trips, separately by direction and time of day.
