Muribaculaceae are Gram-negative, non-motile, mesophilic, and non-sporulating bacteria. Their nearest phylogenetic neighbours are Barnesiella and Coprobacter spp. within the family Porphyromonadaceae, which share <86.5% 16S rRNA gene identity (Lagkouvardos 2019). The family is characterised by G+C contents of genomic DNA between 49.8% and 53.1%, which is greater than Coprobacter (38%) and Barnesiella intestinihominis (44%), but not Barnesiella viscericola (52%)(Lagkouvardos 2019). Major cellular fatty aids are saturated and mainly include anteiso-C15:0.
