Cells are rod-shaped, non-motile, obligate anaerobic, Gram negative, mesophilic, neutrophilic, catalase positive and oxidase negative (Park 2021).
The major cellular fatty acids (> 10%) are anteiso-C15:0 and iso-C15:0. The major cell-wall sugars are ribose and galactose. The meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid of the cell-wall is absent. The major polar lipid is phosphatidylethanolamine. The respiratory quinone are MK-10 and MK-11.
The type species is Heminiphilus faecis.
