Background

These don't have the storage or expansion options of the Proliant DL380p Gen8's, but they are just as powerful (as controller nodes) in a much more compact way with a lot less management headache. I'll run faster but less core-dense CPU's here than in the DL380p's.

The Goods

Product Overview: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=c03241047

Based on Intel Ivy Bridge architecture.

This server has:

  • 2 LGA-2011 sockets supporting any E5-26XXv2 CPU
  • 16 DDR3 slots supporting up to 512GB LRDIMM / 256GB RDIMM
  • 2 PCIEx16 Mezzanine expansions (1x type A, 1x type A/B)
  • ONE OF:
    • HPE FlexFabric:
      • 10Gb 2-port 534FLB: $10
      • 10Gb 2-port 554FLB: $4
      • 20Gb 2-port 650FLB (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
      • 20Gb 2-port 630FLB (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
    • HPE Flex-10: 10Gb 2-port 530FLB: $10
    • HPE Ethernet: 10Gb 2-port 560FLB (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
  • Smart Array P220i Controller w/ 512MB FBWC
  • Internal SDHC + USB 2.0
  • Intel C600 Chipset
  • ILO 4 management

NOTE: See Servers: HP NIC Comparisons

Virtual Connect

Virtual Connect enables a VC port connected to a VC module to virtualize 4 NICs from the 1. In addition to the 2 onboard VC ports, up to 4 more VC ports may be added, giving each blade up to 24 (24!) ports. These mezzanine card options are VC-enabled:

  • 700767-B21 650M 20Gb 2P FF (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
  • 700076-B21 630M 20Gb 2P FF (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
  • 718935-B21 570M 10Gb 2P Ethernet (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
  • 665246-B21 560M 10Gb 2P Ethernet (Not Compatible with VCFF Module 571956-B21)
  • 631884-B21 530M 10Gb 2P Flex-10: $15
  • 700748-B21 534M 10Gb 2P Flex-10: $45
  • 674764-B21 522M 10Gb 2P Flex-10: $20
  • 647590-B21 554M 10Gb 2P FF: $10
  • 615729-B21 366M 1Gb 4P Ethernet: $40

A VC-enabled network module is required on each VC NIC to use this feature.

The Bads

  • The enclosure might be louder than the DL380p's.
  • The CPUs available to bl460c Gen8 have a higher TDP floor than Gen6 (though idle power usage is lower...)
  • Limited to 2 SAS drives without expansion blade.
