My Private Cloud

My cloud is OpenStack. The kolla-ansible installer is a system of its own, with many competitors. I arrived at the Kolla-Ansible to deploy my stack after a few other false starts.

Nitty gritty installation details, and how to do it yourself: IT: Kolla-Ansible Openstack Deployment

Living Room Data Center.

I'm using all HPE gear, from servers to network. I regret every earlier effort I put into making less-than-enterprise gear work.

Server Cabinets

Built around Proliant servers and ProCurve networking. Sealed with front fans for positive pressure. Filtered air for non-degrading cooling. Exhaust vented with barrel fan for improved cooling.

Blade Enclosure

This thing is amazing for reducing cable madness and unifying management. At the cost of noise and some hardware optionality. Perfect for running OpenStack network and controller nodes.

Fileservers

Not OpenStack storage, but personal fileservers. ZFS (FreeNAS (FreeBSD)).

It has taken some iterations to arrive at a build that's reliable and high quality. My performance requirements are lax enough that I can use old workstation-grade servers. HP Z600 towers provide just enough ECC RAM to run ZFS, and just enough core count.

The rest is about reliability - case quality, power supply, fans, etc, which HP delivers. HP FTW, again.

Sabertooth X79

A monster enthusiast-class consumer-grade motherboard, using the same CPU architecture as my OpenStack compute nodes.
