That is, irreplaceable, not disposable. I can afford to lose all of my other "infrastructure" systems (looking at you IT: OpenStack Servers), I cannot afford to lose this storage.
While this storage might be exposed to my IAAS services, there should be no dependency in either direction.
Based on Free BSD this is the real ZFS. Not that wannabe Linux-flavored ZFS.
I might also build ZFS on CentOS down the road. While those would be spun from OpenStack, they would then need to stand alone.
I only build on ECC-RAM-based systems.
HP Z600 Workstations
These workstations are perfect for the task:
- ECC RAM support (required)
- Dual CPU, 20 (hyperthreaded) core max
- Solid HP build
These must be 100% swap-in replaceable. Also, noise and power are big issues.
These lead to the following sensibilities:
- Cookie-cutter heads.
- No-hack head build.
- Leanest head build, off-board everything.
- Expect arbitrary off-box expansion.
Supermicro X9DRx-xx - A beefy, fragile workaround.
HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 - But for real, yo.
perc H310 SAS Controllers
These should be in IT mode vs RAID, ZFS will do the heavy lifting.
I keep my server heads light, with only a perc controller to support externally attached drives. I could put internal drives into these servers, but by keeping heat and power to a minimum I can drive down noise on the proprietary HP fans. Additionally, it's easier to use front fans and filters if there are no internal disks to maintain.
