• Intel 'made a mistake' with Ivy Bridge and gave away too many cores for too cheap, in low-end models.
• Ivy Bridge released ~2013, and now sits in the sweet spot where price has already dropped steeply and performance is still competitive.
• AMD was never a consideration.
