- Intel 'made a mistake' with Ivy Bridge and gave away too many cores for too cheap, in low-end models.
- Ivy Bridge released ~2013, and now sits in the sweet spot where price has already dropped steeply and performance is still competitive.
- AMD was never a consideration.
I'm using only sub-100W CPU's in my own builds to drive down noise and power...

This platform has a lot of headroom if I start feeling a little Texan, up to ~150W / socket.
