Offset node icon   Offset (node)

Grow or shrink an outline by a set distance, with a choice of what happens at the corners.

Offset effect: a pentagon and its outward offset outline, with the Distance between them marked at the center of the bottom edge.

Inputs

  • Geometry (any): the shape(s) to grow or shrink.
  • Distance (any): the signed offset distance in mm (a number, a value field, or a list - one per item).
  • Corner (pulldown): how outer corners fill: Sharp (miter), Round, Chamfer, or None. Pick it from the pulldown when unwired, or wire an integer 0-3.

Outputs

  • Geometry (any): the offset geometry.

What it is for

Grows or shrinks an outline, keeping it a set distance from the original all the way round.

The distance is signed: positive moves the outline in one direction, negative moves it in the other. If it goes the wrong way, put a minus in front. Zero passes the geometry through unchanged.

Corner decides what happens where the offset outline turns: Sharp carries the edges out to a point, Round arcs across, Chamfer cuts a flat, None leaves the two edges unmet. With None, an offset that happens to bring the two edges to the same point closes up and stays a single piece rather than breaking apart there.

Sharp has a limit worth knowing: on a very tight corner the point would run away to infinity, so beyond a certain sharpness it falls back to a chamfer.

The Distance input - number vs field

  • A number: one offset distance for the whole geometry.
  • A value field: each item is offset by the field's value at its own centroid, so different places in space get different offsets (image-driven).
