I started out with drones by doing the SITL (total sim) (1) series of simulation tutorials. Great tutorials, but of very minimal use when it came to actually building and flying drones. :) And I spent probably 2 months doing the (outdated) tutorial (and creating updated docs).

Now its at the end of this wiki. :)

The following I would not recommmend to pursue (at least when you are just getting started with drones):

• (12) ROS (+ROSMAV). Too complex, for robots.
• (14b) Matlab. For sure has some good stuff, but complex and expensive.
• (9b) HITL (frame+world sim). Like SITL, too complex and not needed.
• (10) SITL (total sim) (1). Too complicated and of little practical use.
