Overview

Historic vineyard on Mt. Eden above Saratoga, originally part of the Paul Masson plantings. One of the first California vineyards planted to Pinot Noir in the early 1940s, using budwood from Burgundy.

The vineyard is of historical significance as many of today's modern Pinot Noir plantings have been made with genetic material taken from it.

History

Early 1900s: Paul Masson, a Burgundy native, first planted the site with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using wood from Burgundy.

Early 1940s: Among the first California plantings of Pinot Noir.

1976: After Martin Ray's death, the vineyard was retained by his stepson Peter Martin Ray and widow Eleanor. The vineyard is the remaining 5 acres from the original Martin Ray estate after most of the property became Mount Eden Vineyards.

Present: Still owned and farmed by Peter Martin Ray. The vineyard is organically and dry-farmed.
