Care and calibration
What needs your attention, and how often. The calibration routines are part of the firmware and app, which are still being built; this page describes how they are designed to work. The full setup guide will follow when the process is final.
At a glance
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Recalibrate pH | Every 90 days. After that, readings are marked stale |
| Recalibrate ORP, salinity and dissolved oxygen | Every 180 days |
| Refill reagents | When the app shows a bottle running low |
| Empty the waste bottle | When the app shows it nearly full. Wavie will not start a test with the waste bottle full |
| Replace the pump tubing | When it is worn. It is squeezed on every dose |
| Replace the pH electrode | When Wavie reports its health below 85 % |
Every reading carries its calibration state (uncalibrated, factory default, calibrated, or stale), so you can always see when something is due.
Calibrating the probes
Temperature needs no calibration of its own; it is trimmed at the factory. The other probes are calibrated with standard solutions, and Wavie waits for each reading to settle before it accepts a point.
| Probe | How |
|---|---|
| pH | Buffers: pH 7.00 always, plus pH 4.00, pH 10.01, or both. Two points minimum; three is better |
| ORP | One point, against an ORP standard solution |
| Salinity | Two conductivity standards, 12.88 and 111.8 mS/cm, at least. More are accepted |
| Dissolved oxygen | Works on a default calibration. An optional one-point calibration in water-saturated air improves it |
Standard values change slightly with temperature, so Wavie uses each standard's temperature table rather than its label value. If a calibration comes out outside sensible limits, Wavie rejects it and keeps the previous one, so a probe never ends up worse than it started.
See Probes for more on each.
Reagents and waste
Wavie has no level sensors in the bottles. It estimates each bottle's level, and the waste bottle's, from what it has pumped. When you refill a bottle or empty the waste, tell the app so it can reset the estimate; you can correct it at any time.
Reagents are chemicals. Follow the handling and storage instructions supplied with them. See Reagents.
The pump and photometer
The pump and the photometer are calibrated for each unit at the factory, and the values are stored on the unit. The photometer also takes a fresh dark reading at the start of every test, so slow changes in stray light are taken care of automatically.
Parts that wear
Pump tubing, the pH and ORP electrodes, and reagents are the parts expected to wear out or be used up. Replacement parts will be sold at cost; see Repair and parts.
