Probes
Wavie reads five probes. Four are included with the Beta Kit. The dissolved oxygen probe will be sold separately at launch; the input for it is already on the board.
| Probe | Included | How it is read |
|---|---|---|
| pH | Yes | Glass electrode, isolated input |
| ORP | Yes | Electrode, isolated input |
| Salinity | Yes | Conductivity probe |
| Temperature | Yes | Digital probe |
| Dissolved oxygen | Sold separately | Galvanic probe, isolated input |
Temperature comes first
The Beta Kit includes calibration fluids for the four probes, and the app walks you through calibrating each one.
Temperature is read before anything else, because pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen all need it for correction. If the temperature probe is missing, the readings that depend on it are withheld.
pH
Calibrated with buffer solutions: pH 7 always, plus pH 4, pH 10, or both. Three points is best. After calibration Wavie reports the health of the electrode as a percentage of the ideal response, so you know when it is wearing out.
ORP
Calibrated at one point against a standard solution.
Salinity
Wavie measures conductivity and converts it to salinity using the standard seawater formula, corrected for temperature.
Dissolved oxygen
The probe's signal is converted using a table of oxygen saturation against temperature, then corrected for salinity. Seawater holds about 20% less oxygen than fresh water, so a reading without that correction would be too high.
Honest readings
Every reading carries its state: uncalibrated, factory default, calibrated, or stale. A probe that is unplugged or out of range shows as having no reading. Wavie does not show an old or invented value as if it were live.
