Semantic permutation

Semantic permutation means two compounds of a word get 'flipped', that is the first compound is suddenly interpreted with the meaning of the second and vice versa. This is especially prevalent in symbolic systems and liturgic languages, and related to phono-semantic-matching in wanderworts.

examples

Medieval Latin foresta probably represents the fusion of two earlier words: one taken as an adaptation of the Late Latin phrase forestis silva (“the outside woods”), mistaking forestis for woods

Letter and sign permutation

Many words of Egyptian have matches in Semitic and PIE languages if one allows for reverse right-to-left reading of the signs. These are not necessary to assert broad matches in the dictionary and might be due to chance, but since permutation is a proven mechanism of language evolution, and some forms migth factually (but unprovably) be related through permutation, we leave them here. In any case they can serve as mnemonics.
