There are many books, articles, and courses available to help you learn more about game design and programming.
Game Design Toolkit
The Game Design Toolkit has provided many details and links to further resources. For information about game design, we highly recommend Game Design Workshop by Tracey Fullerton as it provides full details on Play-Centric Design and includes many examples and exercises. The 3rd edition of the book is currently available. In order to learn more about programming, it is best to start by digging into the details of at least one of the game development environments: ARIS, GameMaker Studio, Kodu, or Scratch.

Courses
Microsoft
We talked about the many roles within the development team and made it clear that there is more to game design and implementation than just coding. Having said that, coding is still important! Microsoft offers a course to help you improve how you develop code: Writing Professional Code.
They've also partnered with the University of Michigan to offer Leading Change: Go Beyond Gamification with Gameful Learning. We need to be thinking about not only game design and implementation but also how such games can support learning.
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)
The RIT offers the Video Game Design XSeries Program. Within the program, there are five classes:
- Video Game Asset Creation and Process
- Gameplay Programming for Video Game Designers
- Video Game Design History
- Video Game Design and Balance
- Video Game Design: Teamwork & Collaboration
