Development Tools - leemet16/game-design-toolkit GitHub Wiki

Imagine the tools that are used when building a house. There are saws, hammers, ladders, drills, nail guns, clamps, various hand tools, and many other tools. If we were instead going to build an office tower, we might use some of the same tools, but we would also use some other tools like a crane, welding torches, and others industrial strength and sized tools. In each case, we are creating a structure that will shelter and help people. However, depending on the goals and needs of the project, the selection of tools will vary.

When we create a video game, we also have a choice of tools. The selection of the tool will depend on the task at hand and the needs of our project. If the tool we select lets us meet the vision we have and the needs of the game-player, then we've picked a good tool. If the tool gets in the way of what we're doing and prevents us from building our game, then it was probably the wrong tool.

The following sections introduce some of the tools you can use to build your game. Pick the tool that best fits the requirements you have and will help you to build the game you're imagining.

ActivityPick a Development Tool!

Review the tools listed above and decide on a tool to use for developing your game. Consider the type of game you are creating, the resources available, and the skills of your team. Then in your Game Development Journal, answer the following questions:

  • Why did you pick the tool that you did?
  • How does the tool support the type of game that you want to create?
  • How will you learn how to use the tool?

Remember to always consider copyright issues when developing your game.
