Weapons
In GnollHack, a weapon can have a quality modifier. The quality modifier increases the weapon's base damage.
- Exceptional weapons deal 2x base damage
- Elite weapons deal 3x base damage
- Celestial/Primordial/Infernal weapons deal 4x base damage but can be used only by lawful/neutral/chaotic beings, respectively.
For example, a normal long sword deals 1d8 damage to small creatures and 1d12 to large creatures, while an exceptional long sword deals 2d8 damage to small creatures and 2d12 to large creatures.
Items with Weapon Quality Modifiers
Most items that can be used as weapons in combat can have weapon quality modifiers. These are:
- Melee weapons
- Ranged weapons, including launchers, such as bows
- Thrown weapons
- Ammunition
- Polearms
- Spiked shields
- Spiked gauntlets
- Magical gauntlets, such as gauntlets of ogre power
- Spiked boots
- Kicking boots
Armor
In GnollHack, a piece of armor can have a quality modifier. The quality modifier gives bonus to the armor's AC and MC. The following armor can have quality modifiers:
- Body armor — Non-magical and semi-magical body armor only
- Shields — All shields including the shield of reflection
- Boots — All boots including magical boots
- Gloves — All gloves including magical gloves
Body armor
- Exceptional: -4 AC, +1 MC
- Elite: -8 AC, +2 MC
- Celestial/Primordial/Infernal: -12 AC, +4 MC but can be used only by lawful/neutral/chaotic beings, respectively.
Shields
- Exceptional: -3 AC, +1 MC
- Elite: -6 AC, +2 MC
- Celestial/Primordial/Infernal: -9 AC, +3 MC but can be used only by lawful/neutral/chaotic beings, respectively.
Boots and Gloves
- Exceptional: -2 AC
- Elite: -4 AC, +1 MC
- Celestial/Primordial/Infernal: -6 AC, +2 MC but can be used only by lawful/neutral/chaotic beings, respectively.
Wands
In GnollHack, certain wands can have a quality modifier. The quality modifier increases the wand's base damage.
- Exceptional wands deal 2x base damage
- Elite wands deal 3x base damage
For example, a normal wand of fire deals 4d6 damage, while an exceptional wand of fire deals 8d6 damage.
Wands with Quality Modifiers
The following wands can have quality modifiers:
- Wand of nothing (does not do anything)
- Wand of striking
- Wand of magic missile
- Wand of fire
- Wand of cold
- Wand of lightning
