Damage Types - dredmor-com/dungeons-of-dredmor GitHub Wiki

Dungeons of Dredmor has a deceptively complex damage system, handling several damage and resistance types and balancing them across several levels to always provide a wide range of challenges for the player to surpass, while also adding diversity.

Damage Types

A detailed breakdown of each damage type and how it should be used.

Name + Icons Affected by Armor Base Game Use Suggested modding use
by player by environment by player by environment
crushing
crushing
crushing
Yes
  • Many weapons rely on crushing, sometimes as only damage type, especially [Maces].
  • [Warrior skill trees] add lots of crushing, the Rogue skill tree Throwing has some, too.
  • Little equipment is found with crushing
  • It's the most reliable damage type resisted by armour absorption, due to the small amount of crushing on monsters.
  • Many monsters have it as compound damage dealer, or as only damage dealer. It's amplified by melee power.
  • Rarely any trap uses crushing.
  • Very few monsters resist it through crushing, because many monsters resist it through armour absorption.
  • Many standard melee weapons should have crushing , toned down a bit by compound damages such as toxic.
  • Warrior skill trees should have crushing due to its use in the base game.
  • No equipment should resist it, because armour absorption is more common, useful and familiar to the player.
  • Many melee monsters should have crushing, either as compound, on small monsters, or as main damage dealer, on big ones.
  • Few environmental hazards should use crushing, and not in large amounts, because Warriors can resist it through armour, while Rogues and Wizards might not.
  • No monsters should resist it. armour absorption is recommended for added slashing.
slashing
slashing
slashing
Yes
  • Many weapons rely on slashing, usually accompanied by crushing and/or piercing.
  • [Warrior skill trees] add slashing as compound or as main damage dealer.
  • Little equipment is found with slashing.
  • It's the moderately reliable damage type resisted by armour absorption, due to the amounts of slashing found on many monsters.
  • Many monsters deal it along with some piercing and usually a third, weaker compound. It's amplified by melee power.
  • Many traps, in particular blade traps, use slashing.
  • Some monsters resist it through a big amount of slashing, most monsters resist it through armour absorption.
  • Very many standard melee weapons should have slashing, maybe along with piercing, and maybe with a crushing compound. As only damage dealer, it should have more damage than only crushing-dealers, because of high slashing on monsters.
  • No skill trees should have slashing due to monster resistances against it.
  • No equipment should resist it, because armour absorption is more common, useful and familiar to the player.
  • Many monsters should have slashing aling with some piercing and a third and fourth, weaker compound. Monsters dealing only slashing should only be added early game, because late game armour absorption is too unreliable for Wizards.
  • Environmental hazards may use slashing over crushing. Or not, to diversify damage types.
  • Some monsters should resist it, to keep slashing on weapons less effective.
piercing
piercing
piercing
No
  • Some weapons rely on piercing as only damage dealer, especially [Daggers], and some rely on it along with slashing.
  • [Warrior and Rogue skill trees] add some piercing, and Archery and Daggers heavily rely on it.
  • It passes through armour absorption, but this is heavily accounted for by the massive amount of piercing on monsters, which renders high piercing useless against lots of enemies.
  • Some equipment uses piercing, especially Warrior equipment as compound resistance.
  • Many monsters deal some piercing along with slashing and a third, weaker compound.
  • Many environmental hazards deal piercing as compound, easily negated by any piercing at all.
  • Many monsters such as Construct and Undead [taxa] resist it heavily through piercing. It can be lethal to Animals, however.
  • Some weapons should have piercing, but along with a bigger damage dealer and some compounds. Keep in mind that it's a very weak damage type and that lots of things negate it.
  • No skill trees should have piercing because it's unreliable and weak. It's only really recommended in the early game to beef up damage a tiny bit. Otherwise, it's NOT recommended to add.
  • A lot of equipment should resist it by a tiny bit, one or two points. This is to beef up resistances against high hitting piercing dealers in the late game and keep lower resistances in the early game.
  • Many monstere should have some piercing along with some slashing and one or two weaker compounds. NO monsters should have it as only damage dealer.
  • Few traps should deal it, because it's already dealt a lot in the base game through caltrops. The player will negate most anyways.
  • Very few monsters should resist it, becasue the base game is very much against Dagger characters and it already has heaps of piercing.
blasting
blasting
blasting
Yes
  • Very few weapons rely on blasting. Only thrown weapons, especially bombs, deal quite a bit of it.
  • No skill trees rely on blasting. Few spells deal a small amount of it, usually along with many other components.
  • Very little equipment is found with blasting, and it usually has very high resistance against it.
  • It's the least reliable damage type resisted by armour absorption, due to the tiny amounts of blasting on equipment. Very few monsters resist it, though.
  • Some monsters deal a tiny amount or a huge amount of it. Big monsters usually deal it, and the Diggle Rocketter kills you with it.
  • Some environmental hazards deal high blasting, especially mines.
  • Very few monsters resist it through blasting, most monsters resist it through armour absorption.
  • Few weapons should deal blasting, and rather as bigger damage dealer. Throwing weapons are really good for it, or the odd artifact.
  • Few skill trees should have blasting to keep it somewhat rare. Wizard spells may use some of it, and probably not as biggest damage dealer.
  • Very little equipment should resist it. Especially big pieces of late game armour should resist it, and not early game items, because this would resist another compound of the rather weak warly game monsters.
  • Some large monsters should deal small amounts of it early game and big amounts late game. Edotic damage dealers may deal some more of it mid game.
  • Few environmental hazards should deal blasting - landmines and such.
  • Very few mosnters should resist it to keep it somewhat rare.
