Hearing - caraminden/anathema-roguelike GitHub Wiki
Hearing is a statistic that improves your ability to Detect Sounds. Hearing is improved by a character's Perception and can also be increased by certain Perks and some Enchanted Items. While Hearing is generally less informative than Vision or Sense Magic, it still provides useful information which can be used to inform how a character uses their other senses to gain more information about an enemy.
Once a Sound has been generated it travels a distance based on the amount of Sound generated and the Damping or surrounding Locations. If a character is within that distance, the Sound the character perceives is multiplied by ((4 * Hearing) / (Hearing + 10)). The resulting value determines how well, if at all, they can determine the Location the sound originated from according to the following table.
Perceived Sound | Awareness |
---|---|
0-25 | None |
25-50 | Hears the Sound, but has no idea where it came from |
50-99 | Can locate the origin of the Sound within Circle: 2 |
100+ | Can determine the exact Location the Sound originated from |
If a character perceives a Sound, but cannot determine its exact Location, it may decide to Wait and attempt to listen more closely in case the Sound occurs again.
If a character perceives a Sound that originates from an enemy they are Aware of via their Vision, they can easily determine the source of that Sound.
- The distance a character can hear a Sound from is based on the amount of Sound generated
- Hearing works in all directions, but is hindered by obstructions
- While Hearing has the potential to Detect Stimuli from much farther away than Vision or Sense Magic, it is only able to determine an approximate Location of the Sound
- The louder a Sound is compared to the minimum value required for a character to perceive it, the more likely that character is to accurately determine the exact Location of the sound
