Zoom and pan so everything fits in the window.
Menu: View > Zoom to Fit | Shortcut: Cmd-9 | In depth: The canvas
Zoom to Fit is the way back when you have zoomed in on a detail and lost your bearings. It picks the zoom that brings everything into view and centers it, in one step.
The same command sits on the View menu of both windows, and Cmd-9 works in both. Which one it acts on is whichever window you are working in: the modeling window fits the drawing, the node editor fits the node graph. There is nothing to switch.
To bring one part of the drawing to the middle without changing the zoom, use Center in View instead.
It fits all visible geometry. Anything hidden is left out of the reckoning, so hiding a stray far-off point is enough to stop it dragging the fit wide.
Two things get out of the way on their own. The rulers, when they are on, take a band off the top and the left, and the Layers panel covers part of the right. The fit measures the part of the canvas you can actually see and centers the drawing in that, rather than in the whole window with a third of it behind a panel.
An empty document has nothing to fit, so it frames the origin instead, with the X axis spanning -100 to 100 in your working unit. That is the same starting view every time, whatever size the window is.
Zoom to Fit will go as deep as 80x on a small drawing and as wide as 0.0125x on a very large one, which is the same range the scroll wheel reaches.
It fits all the node bodies, with a comfortable margin around them, and it will not zoom in past 1:1 however few nodes there are. A node graph of two nodes is framed at its natural size rather than blown up to fill the pane.
An empty node graph has nothing to fit, so the view stays where it is.
Cmd-8 fits just what you have selected. It is a modeling-window command and there is no node-editor equivalent, and it lives only on the keyboard: no menu row carries it.
Tip
Zoom to Fit changes only the view. It never moves, scales or alters anything you have drawn, so it is safe to reach for at any point, including in the middle of placing a point.
