Slider node icon   Slider (node)

A draggable number source you can plug into many inputs at once.

Slider node diagram

The Slider is the workhorse input of the node graph: a number you set by dragging, wired into as many downstream inputs as you like. Because the whole node graph is live, dragging the slider updates everything it feeds in real time - a repeat count, an angle, a radius, a spacing.

A slider only ever lands on values in its own series - starting at its Min and stepping up by Step (Min, Min + Step, Min + 2 x Step, ...) up to Max. Whether you drag it, type a value, or set it in the config dialog, the result snaps to a real member of that series.

Important

If the value stands for a length, it is in millimeters. The working unit relabels the modeling window only; the node graph is always mm. Locus puts a warning stripe across the top of the node pane whenever your working unit is not mm, so the two panes cannot be confused. See the node graph is always millimeters and Constants & unit conversions.

Outputs

  • Value (number): the current value of the slider.

Configuration

Double-click the slider's number to open its config and set:

  • Value: the current value (snapped to the series).
  • Min / Max: the ends of the range.
  • Step: the increment between allowed values.

Letting the node graph set the range

Right-click the node and choose Show Sockets and the Slider grows three input sockets: Min, Max and Step. Wire something into them and the node graph works out how far the slider reaches and how finely it moves, instead of you typing it.

The value is deliberately not among them. A slider whose value arrived from upstream would be a clamp with a handle stuck to it, and dragging the handle would do nothing. So the node graph sets the range; you still set the value.

One switch covers the whole node, so the three sockets appear and disappear together rather than a row at a time. Leave it off and the Slider is the one-row source it has always been. A socket and its field in the config are two views of the same number, so they cannot drift apart.

Tip

Reach for a Number node instead when you want a fixed constant you rarely change, and a Random node when you want a value picked from a series for you. See Input nodes.
