While dragging, snap a point onto existing points.
Menu: Edit > Snap to Points | In depth: Canvas basics
One of the four snap toggles, and the strongest of them. With it on, a point you are dragging jumps onto existing points as you come near, and a gold dot with a ring shows you which point it will land on before you let go.
It is on by default, and it applies while you drag. Placing a new point has its own rules, described on Point.
When several things are within reach of the cursor, the order is fixed, and points come first.
- An existing point.
- An intersection of two objects.
- A guide crossing an object.
- An alignment with other points.
- A guide on its own.
So a point wins over a crossing even when the crossing is nearer, which is deliberate: an existing point is a thing somebody put there, and landing exactly on it is almost always what was meant.
Hidden points still catch. The construction under a figure is usually hidden, and snapping to it is how you keep building on it, so hiding something does not take it out of the snap set. If a drag keeps landing somewhere you cannot see, a hidden point is why.
A point cannot snap to its traveling companions. When a drag moves several points at once, all of them are left out of the snap set, so the group cannot collapse onto itself and a point cannot chase its own old position.
Guides snap to points too, with the same priority: drag a guide and it lands on a point or a crossing rather than wherever the cursor stopped.
For placing something deliberately close to a point without joining it. Points snap from a few pixels away, and at a tight zoom that is a real distance, so a deliberate near miss needs the toggle off rather than a steady hand.
Turn it back on afterward. Most of what makes a construction hold together is points landing exactly on other points, and this is the toggle that does it.
