animal care - ZAWA-Evolved/ZAWA GitHub Wiki

Health

Health is vital. You can keep track of and check an animal's health with an animal data book.

An injured, tamed animal can be hand fed kibble, each restoring 5 points! Alternatively, an injured ambient animal can be hand fed their breeding item, each restoring 1 point.

Tamed animal care

If you decide to tame the animals from ZAWA: Evolved, they will have 3 new care stats you need to keep an eye on: enrichment, hunger, and thirst. These can all be tracked with the animal data book and are also highly configurable.

Enrichment

Enrichment is a care mechanic in ZAWA: Evolved.

Enrichment equipment consists of blocks, items, and entities used by animals to play, groom, or simulate natural behaviors. Animals will seek out and use any enrichment equipment set out close to them as they need it.

All animals have 20 enrichment "points" that deplete at a rate of 1 per 4800 ticks (5 per day). If an animal does not have access to any enrichment equipment, it will be fully "bored" within 4 minecraft days.

Unlike food and water, animals do not need enrichment to survive, but they do need full enrichment to breed. Animals who are bored will quickly revert to wild behavior based on their temperament. More dangerous animals will attack the player and other player entities, and passive animals will flee from players.

Different species of animals have different sets of enrichment equipment they can use, which can be checked on the wiki, or in the animal data book.

Enrichment blocks are placed by the player, and are permanent. Enrichment entities are placed, interactive items that are generally cheap to craft and may break after so many uses; but they yield high enrichment value. Enrichment items are held tools used by the player directly on an animal.

Hunger

Hunger is a care mechanic in ZAWA: Evolved.

Once tamed, animals require regular feeding to survive. Animals also must have a full hunger stat to breed.

The capacity of an animal's hunger bar, and its subsequent food needs, are defined by its size stat. Larger animals need to eat significantly more food than smaller ones.

  1. Giant: 20 points
  2. Large: 16 points
  3. Medium: 12 points
  4. Small: 8 points
  5. Tiny: 4 points

It's important to remember that not all animals eat the same diet, and even the same food may not give the same value to every animal.

An animal's diet dictates what food items the animal can eat. Depending on an animal's size, it will need to eat more or less food to stay satiated. Diets can be viewed in the animal data book.

Animals who are not kept fed will revert to wild behaviors based on their temperament, and if left hungry for too long, may die. Animals who are left without any food for 4 minecraft days (96000 ticks) will starve to death.

Edible items can be consumed by tamed animals out of feeders or when fed manually by hand.

Individual animals have a favorite food that yields 2x the usual food points. Animals will prioritize eating their favorite food out of feeders. An animal's favorite food can be seen by right clicking them with the animal data book.

Items can be added to diets, and can generally be changed, through data packs. The Click For Hot Chicks mod is built to work with ZAWA: Evolved as an expansion pack for animal food options, and Evolved loads its items into diets automatically.

Diets

Diets are defined by animal species, and as of 1.0.0, there are 13 diets.

  • Bamboo is a specialist diet consisting of bamboo, including ZAWA's black bamboo and yellow bamboo.
  • Eucalyptus is a specialist diet consisting exclusively of eucalyptus leaves.
  • Frugivore is a diet consisting of fruit, seeds and grain.
  • Herbivore is a generalist plant diet consisting of diverse fruit, vegetables and roughage.
  • Nectivore is a specialist diet consisting of sugar and flower nectar.
  • Ruminant is a diet consisting of fibrous plant material.
  • Omnivore is an extreme generalist diet. With the exception of animal byproducts and some toxic fruits, omnivorous animals can eat almost every food in the game, including cooked meat and prepared foods.
  • Insectivore is a carnivore diet consisting of farmed food invertebrates and other arthropods.
  • Large carnivore is a carnivore diet consisting of large animal meat.
  • Piscivore is a diet consisting of fish and fish products.
  • Scavenger is an extreme generalist carnivore diet. Scavenger animals can eat nearly every meat, fish, and animal product in the game, including eggs, bones, leather, and rotten flesh.
  • Shellfish is a specialist piscivore diet consisting of aquatic arthropods and farmed shellfish.
  • Small carnivore is a carnivore diet consisting of small animals, small animal meat, and eggs.

Thirst

Thirst is an animal care mechanic in ZAWA: Evolved. Unlike ZAWA: Rebuilt, thirst works correctly and is a vital aspect of animal husbandry.

An animal's thirst meter and current status can be checked in the animal data book.

Every animal has a thirst meter equal to its hunger, which is based on the animal's size. Thirst depletes 1.5x as fast as hunger, so providing a constant source of water for animals is vital.

Animals need water to survive, and will begin to dehydrate to death after 4 days (96000 ticks) without access to it. Animals do not display wild behavior when deprived of water, so it's important to monitor them.

Animals can consume water out of water-filled feeder blocks, from water source blocks, or when given manually by hand with a bucket or water bottle. Building ponds, moats, watering holes and other water features can be a creative way to meet animals' water needs while keeping enclosures themed.
