BNM — Skeletal Animations
Extension
.bnm
Purpose
BNM files contain skeletal animation data used by Getting Up characters and animated assets.
They store animation information related to skeletons and bone transformations.
Tool support
Getting Up Modding Tool currently supports:
- Reading BNM files
- Skeleton compatibility matching
- Experimental animation preview
Animation compatibility
The tool can compare BNM animation data with mesh skeletons to identify compatible models.
This allows animations to be previewed with matching character meshes.
See Animation Preview (Experimental).
Partial-body animations
Getting Up uses layered animation behavior.
Some animation clips affect only a subset of bones rather than providing a complete pose for the whole body.
Certain L_TR_* clips are examples of partial-body animation behavior investigated by the tool.
Bind pose behavior
Because the tool does not yet fully reproduce the game's animation layering and blending system, bones not affected by a partial animation can remain in the bind pose.
This does not necessarily indicate a broken animation file.
Facial clips
MeshAnim_* clips are detected but are not currently played by the viewer.
Known limitations
Current limitations include:
- Layered animation blending is incomplete.
- Some unusual BNM variants are unsupported.
- Animation playback is not included in mesh exports.
Reverse-engineering checklist
When documenting a BNM variant, record:
- Header / version information
- Skeleton and bone identifiers
- Track count
- Frame and key data
- Transform encoding
- Partial-body behavior
- Unknown flags
Unknown areas
Some parts of the BNM format still require investigation.
Document separately:
- Confirmed behavior
- Observed patterns
- Current hypotheses
