Intranet - TrinianGames/Sapphory GitHub Wiki

The Intra-Sapphorian High Speed Network, or intranet for short, is all that remains of the ancient world's internet. The network covers the whole of Sapphory. Its underlying architecture, much like ancient China's is designed in such a way as to give the state complete access and control. Its lack of a deep or dark web, and use of a user token system completely eliminates privacy or anonymity, which makes it quite unlike the internet of old. For example, the posting of revenge porn or any other form of obscene material without the subject's consent is impossible to do without being caught, and so does not happen.

History

At the time of Sapphory's discovery, the internet was already ubiquitous worldwide, and was one of the first things to be installed across the island as the cities grew. However, due to the secretive nature of the early colonisation efforts, there was a period of several weeks between the internet's installation and the existence of the island being announced to the world. Secrecy was paramount, and so the island's network architecture was designed to allow the government to firewall communications and prevent leaks. This resulted in the creation of the unique user token system, which ensured all communication could be tracked to source. At the time, there were grave human rights and privacy concerns, but with cybercrime and cyber-warfare attacks common during the second cold war, the risk-averse women of Sapphory were persuaded to give these things up in the name of security.

Utility

The intranet is used for many of the same things as its predecessor: online shopping, gaming, distraction, and of course social interaction. Sapphory has no concept of social media, as almost all Sapphorian intranet content has some aspect of this to it, given the total lack of anonymity. Every interaction has the real name of the poster visible, and for this reason, trolling and flame wars are far less common.

A number of intranet giants (all ultimately owned by the nobility,) are household names in Sapphory. Rainforest, the largest online shopping site has warehouses in every Sapphorian city and its own delivery network rivalling the Sapphorian postal service. SkyBNB offers cheap holiday accommodation and of course SlaveTrade, run by the Sapphorian Underling Bureau to advertise new slaves for sale gets millions of hits a day, 97% of which are from women who could never even afford a slave.
