From distant Phocaea, the city of Massilia stands in the auspices of that great Ionian ancestry. In Anatolia the first ever currency was printed, and that spirit of trade is not lessened here. Situated on the coast by the Rhone River, Massilia is well positioned to send Mediterranean goods up the river into Transalpine Gaul. As the greatest harbor of Greek culture in this part of the sea, it has a unique position as one of the richest cities of the region. This proximity to the Western Barbarian people is a double-edged sword however, as they are just as likely to come to the gates of Massilia with swords as they are with open purses.
Therefore, necessary procedures must be put into place. The Massilians founded their city off of a profound naval victory against both the Etruscans and Carthaginians, solidifying Greek might at sea by this act. It is in the valor of such history that the Massilians must look to now, as the world is advancing around them. Rome is the most immediate threat, and if that should prove an invalid worry then the Phoenicians of Carthage are not far behind. It may not be possible now to remain an independent city, a fact that has already cemented itself in Greece itself.
Should the Massilians wish to see the prospering of Greek culture in the Western Mediterranean continue, they must draw up alliances with the other Greek cities of the region or else look to building an empire of their own. This will involve careful negotiations with the barbarian powers, but Greek industry is superior to that of its neighbors. The fear is in disunity and lack of manpower, and these issues can only be solved by incorporating non-Greek territories and cooperating with all of the needs of the new state in an efficient manner. A wise Massilian ruler will see that the people are well taken care of, and that trade prospers, but he must not grow complacent in the strength of one city. If he does this, he will meet the fate of all of Greece.
