Background - SIMLabHAW/SIMLab-Emergency-Simulator GitHub Wiki

This page offers an overview of some related topics to the ES project. It is discussed about the types and usage of simulations in healthcare. Further material about the topics are also offered.

Simulations in healthcare

Many areas within healthcare requires one to have intense practical training, as it is one of the jobs that counts the most with human interaction. Many times this interaction may cause harmful situations to arise, which can lessen the possibilites for training. However, through the combination of interactive multimedia environment with the internet, new opportunities to learn complex interconnected topics are as well as to practice skills in a free of harm environment are created, without endangering patients.

The possibilities for learning and training provided by the usage of simulations in healthcare are beneficial not only to physicians or care takers, but also for rescuers, firefighters and so on. Therefore, simulations can be done in different platforms, depending on their purpose.

Virtual Reality

An often used type of simulation for healthcare application is Virtual Reality (VR). With broad usage, VR can be used in many medical situations, for instance, to assist on treating chronic pain, aiding the fight against memory loss, to simulate enhanced surgeries or to have a better insight about the details of the human body.

Web-based simulations

Another great way of using simulations in healthcare is through web-based simulations. Having a wide range of applications (which can include VR), web-based simulations offer flexibility to operate with little requirements, while still serving as a great tool for learning purposes. Considering the purpose of the Emergency Simulator, a web-based environment has all the necessary tools to develop an application with great potential in healthcare.
