Whole tyres
End-of-life tyres can mainly be used whole in the fields of energy recovery or public works.
Shred
Shredding is the process to cut a whole tyre into raw pieces, called shreds The necessary force to cut a tyre is important, and requires industrial equipment.
Granulation
It is the process to separate the different components of tyres
- Rubber in Powder & Granulates
- Metallic wires
- Textile fibres
Different technologies are currently used, and they operate either at ambient temperature or at low temperature (cryogenic process).
Powder & Granulates
Rubber granulates have quite different properties from plastics or virgin rubber for example. This is due to the way tyres are made. More informations about the origin and the resulting properties on this specific article. Here is a list of different techniques that can be used to transform or work with rubber granulates and powder:
- Compression Use of a mechanical force to create compressed rubber mats
- Molding Granulates are linked using sulphur, using compression in a mould at high temperature
- Plastic compounding Incorporation of rubber into a plastic matrix
- Devulcanization Breaking of the reticulated network to retrieve "virgin" rubber
- Colouring Changing the appearance of the black tyre rubber
