Animal Skin - unforbidable/tfcplus-bids GitHub Wiki

Description

Animal skin relpaces Rawhide and Fur as drops from butchered animals. It drcay, much like food does, until processed into Preserved hide or fur, Rawhide or Leather.

Process

Fresh animal skin decays rapidly and may spoil if not processed or preserved soon. Some of the processing step reduce the decay rate or stop it entirely.

Skin product overview:

Product Required Usage
Preserved skin Scraping tool, Fire (smoke) Fur-bearing preserved skin can be used as TFC fur
Rawhide Scraping tool, Lime or Lye (optional), Cordage As TFC Raw Hide
Leather Scraping tool, Lime or Lye (optional), Tannin, Cordage, Smoothing tool As TFC Leather

Fleshing

Fleshing removes any meat and fat that remains on the skin.

Place Fresh hide on a Processing Surface and use a scraping tool on it. The fresh skin becomes a fleshed skin.

Fleshing greatly reduces the decay rate and should be done as soon as possible. In addition, a portion of decay is restored.

Rinsing

Place fleshed skin in fresh water to rinse it thoroughly. Fleshed hide becomes Clean skin.

Rinsing a fleshed skin reduces the decay rate even more.

Complete Preservation

Clean skin can be finished to produce preserved skin that can used for decoration, fur clothing, or simply to postpone further processing.

To make Preserved Skin, simply place Clean skin on a Drying Rack located over a lit firepit to smoke it.

Preserved skin no longer decays.

Preserved skin can be soaked again, turning back into Clean skin, and then it can be processed into rawhide or leather.

Liming

To make rawhide or leather, any hair needs to be removed from the skin first. Liming allows the hair to loosen up and prepares the skin for dehairing.

Soak clean skin in lime water to prepare it. The clean skin becomes a prepared skin.

In absence of lime, weak wood ash lye can be used to prepare a clean skin.

If neither lime or lye is available, sufficiently decayed skin loosen its hair on its own. However, keep in mind that decay will likely reduce the finished yield.

Taking advantage of decay in this way may be difficult in cold environment when decay rate is reduced. Salted skins can be soaked to remove these modifier.

Although soaking a skin in lime or lye washes of any salt, doing so greatly reduces the decay rate on its own.

Dehairing

Dehairing allows finishing a skin into rawhide and eventually into leather.

To dehair a prepared skin, place it on a Processing Surface and use a scrapping tool repeatedly. Prepared skin becomes dehaired skin.

More hairy skins will take longer and require more effort to dehair. Preparing skin in lime and lye greatly reduces the effort needed.

Dehairing does not affect the decay rate, but some of existing decay is restored.

Rawhide

Dehaired skin can be finished into a rawhide.

To make rawhide, place dehaired skin on Drying Pegs or a Drying Frame and let it dry out while stretched.

Rawhide no longer decays.

Tanning

Tanning allows finishing a skin into leather.

Soak a dehaired skin in Tannin to tan it. Dehaired skin becomes Tanned skin.

Tanned skin can be finished into leather.

Tanning greatly reduces decay rate.

Leather

Making leather from tanned skin consists of drying and working the skin.

To make Leather, start by placing a tanned skin on Drying Pegs or a Drying Frame to dry it while stretched. After a while the skin will stop drying, which means it is time to work the skin.

To work the skin, place it on a Processing Surface and use a Smoother on it repeatedly. After a while working the skin will stop making progress, which means it is time to dry the skin again.

Repeat until skin has been sufficiently dried and worked, and the tanned skin turns into leather.

Preserved Skin can be soaked and dehaired and eventually turned into rawhide or leather.

Rawhide can be soaked, tanned and then finished into leather.

Salting

Fresh, Fleshed, Clean and Dehaired skin can be salted to reduce its decay rate.

Combine the skin with salt in the crafting grid to salt it the same way food is done.

Some processing steps such as Liming and Tanning require that salted skin is rinsed off first. Steps that involve soaking and scrapping remove salt from the skin.

Wool

Skin from a domesticated sheep that has not been sheered will drop a Speepskin with wool.

Place Clean or Preserved Sheepskin on a Processing Surface and use a knife to sheer it. The skin becomes a sheered Sheepskin, and wool is given to the player.

Weight

Skins have weight, much like food does, which specifies how much fur, rawhide, or leather can be taken from it.

  • Large - 64 oz
  • Medium - 32 oz
  • Small - 16 oz
  • Tiny - 8 oz
  • Repair patch - 1 oz

When a skin is looted from a butchered animal, the initial weight is always larger than the original rawhide or fur size, partially depending on the size of the specific animal, and more so on the butchering skill of the player.

The final weight may be reduced if the skin sustains significant decay during its processing.

Knapping

Preserved fur, rawhide and leather can be used to make parts of clothing. Right click an eligible skin to open the knapping GUI.

Each time an item is knapped, 16 oz of weight is consumed. Skin that are smaller than 16 oz cannot be knapped and can only be cut into repair patches, or merged together.

Cutting

Preserved fur, rawhide and leather can be cut up into fur, rawhide and leather of fixed size. Only fur, rawhide and leather of fixed size can be used in crafting and construction.

Craft a preserved fur, rawhide and leather with a knife in the crafting grid to cut it. Larger sizes are cut first, as long as sufficent weight is available.

  • Preserved fur can be cut into Large, Medium, Small size or repair patches.
  • Rawhide can cut into Large, Medium, Small, Tiny size.
  • Leather can be cut into Small size or repair patches.

Merging

In lieu of normal item stacking, certain skins can be merged together to produce one skin of combined weight.

  • Preserved fur and rawhide - only left-over pieces smaller than 16 oz can be merged together
  • Leather - pieces of any size can be merged together up to the maximum weight of 160 oz

Notes

  • Fleshing, dehairing and working animal skins raises the player's butchering skill.
  • Skins cannot be placed in small vessels currently to prevent slowing down the decay.
  • Dehaired skins can be tanned on a Soaking Surface in the naturally occuring tannin water in the world.
  • Butchering animals in hot weather should be avoided without exessive use of salt to slow down skin decay.
