Logging in

Log in to the Data Portal at data.rrc.uic.edu

UIC Users Please use your netid and password.

Non-UIC users You will need to log in with Illumina BaseSpace credentials tied to the email address the data has been shared with — please check which inbox you receive data invitations from. If you do not have one, you can make a BaseSpace account for free at Illumina's website: login.illumina.com.

UIC and the RRC are not affiliated in any way with Illumina.

Once you login to the data portal you should see a view of recent projects and recent releases for your projects.

To access one of your projects, click on the project in the Recent Projects table OR click on the Projects menu item below the RRC Data Portal header.

Viewing data

  • Data sets are shared under the "Files" heading.
  • Data will be tagged as "Raw data" (e.g., fastq files), "Results", and "Reports". You can toggle these data types on and off using the buttons along the top.
  • Data are shared through Releases — batches of results that are generated and shared at the same time.
    • Release names will be displayed under the "Release" column in the file list. You can click on this release name to see all files released at the same time.
    • You can browse past releases under the "Activity" heading.
    • Notes provided by the RRC that accompany the releases will be included in these pages as well.

Sharing data

Certain users may be designated as Owners of a project, which allows them to share results files with additional collaborators. Owners may also grant owner permissions to other users. An owner will typically be the project PI or lead investigator(s) on a project within a lab.

  • Browse to the Users heading to see a list of all users and their roles on a project.
  • Owners can add or revoke ownership permissions of existing users
  • Owners can invite additional collaborators by entering their email address following the Add a user button.
    • The new collaborator will receive an invite directly from the Portal notifying them of the share. No additional action is needed.
      • If the user is a UIC user, be sure to add their UIC email and the user would be able login to the data portal using their UIC credentials.
      • If the user is a non-UIC user, be sure to use an email that is tied to an existing Basespace account.
    • To facilitate easy data sharing, this type of collaborative sharing can be done without involvement of RRC staff.

Downloading data

Data may be downloaded one file at a time, or downloaded in bulk via SFTP. Some files can be viewed directly in the browser, such as HTML reports, text files, and PDF or PNG images.

Downloading one file at at time

Click the file you'd like to download. If it opens in the browser instead of downloading, you can:

  • Right-click the link and choose
    • Chrome and Firefox: "Save Link As..."
    • Safari: "Download Linked File"

Copy files to Box

From the main page for a Project click on "Copy to..." and select "Box".

This will open the "Copy project data to Box" page. NOTE: If this is the first time you are using Box, it may prompt you to allow the RRC Data Portal to use Box. Please allow the RRC Data Portal application access to Box and then it should display the "Copy project data to Box" page.

  1. Select the destination folder on Box. Double click on a folder to view any subfolders.
