Troubleshooting

Most problems announce themselves on the monitor, the Info card or a note over your head. Here is what each one means.

When it says

You see Why Do this
LOW BATT, LOAD SHED BACK AT N% The batteries reached their floor. Wait for sun. Switch appliances off to bring N down. More batteries or panels mean fewer dark nights.
BREAKER TRIP It tripped on a version before 2.10.0. Off-Grid › Reset the breaker, once. It won't trip again.
Not wired to anything. Makes nothing. No cable joins it to the system. Run cable from here, then Connect on the controller or on a part already wired in.
Sky: under a roof The array can't see the sky. Move it outdoors.
Too far for one run of cable. Longer than 12 tiles, or 30 to or from a transformer. Chain through another part, or move the parts closer.
Switch it off first A running controller can't be moved. Off-Grid › Switch off, then pick it up or rotate it.
Placed by somebody else The owner lock on a server: picking a part up, and its controls. Ask the owner, a member of the safehouse it stands in, or an admin (see Multiplayer).
Connect this transformer to the controller first. No cable joins it to the controller, or the controller is so far away (about 70 tiles or more) that the game has unloaded it. No cable: Run cable from here, then Connect on the controller or on a transformer already wired in. Too far: wire it from within 70 tiles of the controller and 20 of the transformer. In singleplayer that only works up to about 90 tiles from the controller; on a server, have someone stand near the controller.
No building in reach. No building has a room within 20 tiles of the part, and the part does not stand in a structure you built. Move the part closer, or pick a structure you built with Choose buildings....
Not a closed building with a roof. A structure you built has a gap in its walls, or less than half of it is roofed. Close it and roof it, then pick it again.
Another system already powers that building. A different controller's system has wired it. Unwire it from that system first.
This part already wires all it can. One part wires up to 8 buildings. Wire the rest from a transformer.
POWER REACH LIMITED (LOADS page, while it lists nothing; Info shows Power reach in red) LG Extended Electricity's "Mod sets generator range" option cuts the game's power range to 1 tile, for the controller and every transformer. Turn that option and "Mod sets generator vertical range" off in its sandbox settings, then restart the server or reload your singleplayer save.
NO FUEL (GEN) Its tank and its barrels are empty. Off-Grid › Refuel with a Gas Can, or Connect fuel barrel (see Backup generators).
INDOORS (GEN) It is inside a building, or walled and roofed in. Move it outside. A walled yard without a roof counts as outdoors.
FAULT (GEN) Worn out, or its square caught fire. Put any fire out, then Off-Grid › Repair the generator (Scrap Electronics; Electrical 3 or the magazine).
MIXED FLUID (GEN) A barrel holds something besides gasoline, so it is skipped. Empty it and fill it with gasoline only.
HOSE LOST (GEN) A barrel was taken, moved or left out of reach. Its hose lies beside the generator. Pick the hose up and Connect fuel barrel again.
OFF BY SERVER (GEN) The server has switched backup generators off. Ask an admin: Sandbox › Off-Grid › Allow backup generators.
Switch its AUTO off first. Its AUTO is on, so Auto decides when it runs. Switch its AUTO off on GEN, or Off-Grid › Auto: turn off, then Start or Stop.
Turn the generator off first. / Disconnect the generator first. / Move the generator outside first. Converting needs it off, disconnected and outdoors. Do that, then Off-Grid › Convert to Off-Grid backup.
Stop it first. A running backup generator can't be picked up, rotated, repaired or converted back. Switch its AUTO off, then Off-Grid › Stop.
Cut its cable first. A backup generator still cabled to a controller can't be converted back. Off-Grid › Cut a cable, then convert it.
This controller already has four generators. A controller runs up to four. Cable it to another controller.

When something's off

Problem Why Do this
The panels make little Clouds, winter, dust, snow, damage or a poor facing. Read the array's Info card. Clean, sweep, repair, and face it south.
An appliance gets no power The controller is off or starting up, or the appliance is past its 20 tiles in a building that is not wired. Switch it on, wire up the building (see Power whole buildings), and check System monitor › LOADS.
No Off-Grid menu You are in a safehouse you don't belong to. Ask one of its members.
The bank holds less in winter Cold. A rack out in the weather loses most, a rack in a room much less. Move the bank indoors. Above 15 C there is no penalty at all.
A backup generator never starts It is not cabled to the controller, its AUTO or the controller's AUTO is off, the batteries are above START AT, or GEN shows NO FUEL, INDOORS, FAULT or OFF BY SERVER. Open System monitor › GEN (see Backup generators).
No equalise option It only shows when a crate or Battery Bank has lost health. Nothing. Sealed cabinets never need it.
OffGrid: INCOMPLETE in console.txt Another mod is blocking Off-Grid's tiles or items. Report it with that line and your mod list.

Reporting a bug

  1. With Error Magnifier: open it, go to the Mods tab, pick Off-Grid and press Copy. That copies the error and Off-Grid's own report on your rig.
  2. Without it: send %UserProfile%\Zomboid\console.txt right after it happens, before you restart. On a server, send the server's console log too.
  3. Say whether it was singleplayer or a server, and list your other mods.

Post it in the Bug Reports discussion on Steam, or open an issue.
