1. Introduction

This guide is the primary reference for educational and classroom deployments of Enigma-NG. It covers the two intended classroom deployment modes and the mandatory ESD and Health & Safety requirements that must be met before handling any Enigma-NG hardware in a lab or workshop environment.

2. Deployment Modes

2.1 Study / Probing Sessions

Non-assembled PCBs (bare boards, unpopulated or partially populated) are used for circuit investigation, probing, and study activities. These sessions are designed for students to examine the physical hardware, trace signals, and understand board-level design.

  • Boards are handled directly by students under instructor supervision.
  • Full ESD PPE is required at all times (see §3 and §4).

2.2 Implementation Workshops

Fully assembled and tested Enigma-NG units are used for encryption and decryption exercises. In this mode, students operate the system as an end user rather than handling bare PCBs.

  • Fully assembled units are used in a bring-up and operational context.
  • ESD PPE is still required when handling any exposed boards or connectors.

3. ESD Requirements

All classroom lab environments used for Enigma-NG hardware sessions must meet standard Electrostatic Discharge Protected Area (EPA) requirements.

3.1 Required PPE

The following ESD PPE is mandatory for all personnel handling Enigma-NG hardware:

Item Requirement
ESD wrist strap Grounded, tested before each session
ESD mat / work surface Grounded, covering the full work area
ESD-safe tools All tools used on or near PCBs must be ESD-rated

3.2 ESD Handling Rules

  • Never handle PCBs without a grounded wrist strap in place.
  • Store bare PCBs in anti-static bags when not in use.
  • Do not place PCBs on unprotected surfaces (desks, clothing, foam packing).
  • Avoid touching component leads, pads, or connector pins directly.

4. Health and Safety

ESD PPE is mandatory by Health & Safety rules within the classroom Lab environment. Instructors are responsible for ensuring all participants are briefed on and comply with ESD requirements before any hardware is handled.

Note: This section is a placeholder. A full H&S risk assessment covering the Enigma-NG classroom deployment is to be completed before the first scheduled educational session.
